Just curious about the amount of turbo failure's on this forum.

Please be honest when answering question.

If you've had a blown/faulty turbo, was the car re-mapped/superchipped etc?

Or did it blow when car was standard power?

Good poll. Also would help if you know your driving habits (i.e. do you drive like like you stole it) :giggle:

It's a shame most people will be afraid to answer it though in-case they think it's their fault it's blown :giggle:

Turbo let go at 52k, whilst on the Nurburgring. It was my warm up lap too so wasn't ragging it. I would say I have a good deal of mechanical sympathy overall though.

It went with absolutely no warning, and caught it on video!

Mine let go at 58k, mapped car & other mods.

I was only changing from 2nd to 3rd on very light throttle when it started to whine loudly :(

Mine let go at 71k, car has few mods, running around 190bhp, turbo let go whilst i was giving it some, had been told the day before by my mechanic that the turbo seals look like they are on there last legs tho.

This scares me (srs).

My bro in law had a look at the turbo and stated its on its last legs. 73k...

Do i buy a garret now and then stick it on or just leave it as is... :(

Id start saving if i was you then as mine didnt last long after i was told it was about to go, wish i had of known sooner

best replacement is GT1749VA i assume? I am looking to replace purely for reliability not extra bhp...

Feckin hell...no wonder i'm always broke!

Lol. The reliability route always costs that little bit more money.

Yup, it's called a Lexus

if the turbo is on its last legs ( if u can tell) id look at changing it. Mine went and the turbine smashed into lots of bits and sent them round the system and i had to replace the intercooler as well. Suppose it depends how they go.

45000 miles standard, warmed up and cooled down properly, pulling away doing about 20 in 2nd - pop! One snapped turbine shaft!

It would be interesting to see wether really low mile failures can be linked with demonstrater cars?

Pah - Its not a Nurburgring turbo failure unless you fill the ENTIRE valley with smoke when it pops. I sure wish I'd got mine on video....

Mine was standard, letting go 4 hours from home with no recovery

Mmmmm. So far it's 8-5 to the mapped cars.

To be honest I thought it would have been more than that blown on the mapped lot.

Mine was mapped and blew at 65k. Contributing factors were:

-the map itself (Ben from Shark Performance said it was awful, in my defence the previous owner had it put on),

-the fact I had a decat fitted AFTER the map (retrospect eh? I know more now than I did then),

-the significant boost leak from a turbo hose Ben identified during the rebuild.

I always warmed the car up properly and let her run for a few minutes to cool down, serviced regularly and properly etc.

Potentially could have been avoided were it not for the three factors above, but nevermind. Now she is more powerful and more reliable.

20 blown turbo's so far!

I know a guy with an 02' octavia 1.9 tdi, had from new and has done 280,000 miles on the same turbo!

Car still mint!

Mine went at around 42k. Standard, enthusiastically driven but looked after.

The problem with asking things like this, is you never really get a true representation of the figures.

Nobody ever really posts up on the internet that their turbo is still going strong, they only post when it goes and start looking for advice, so it ends up looking like there're lots of turbos failing and they''re crap.

Same with reviews for products, most people never both writing a good review as something just works as they want, so as soon as you search for one, the first thing you generally come across is a negative review.

FYI, 91k, and still on original turbo.

^^ that is a good point. We could do 100`s of questions about turbos, but it`ll never give a real figure. Just drive them and enjoy them, do all you can to look after the car, and if it goes, it goes.
