brake question

Featured Replies

Hi there, I've done some searches but I'm struggling for some answers to this one.

I'm a bit of a novice but I replaced the front brakes (discs and pads) in October 2010 with no problems, using copper grease thinly on the mating face of the disc where it contacts the wheel.

I just did the rear discs and pads over the weekend. However my mate suggested using some copper grease on the backs of the pads. However from somewhere a very small amount of copper grease seems to have got onto the discs themselves. It is just in the inner circumfurance of the surface of the disc where the brake pad has contact with.

It doesn't appear to have affected braking performance whatsoever.

However I am thinking the pads will need replacing and the discs cleaning with brake cleaner is that right?

It's a right pain I have none of the tools to do it myself, don't even have access to my jack and axle stands!

don't worry about it, a small amount will soon burn off and disappear :)

Cheers mate, thats what I thought. It's a very small amount not like a big blob on the disc like a tiny smear visible on the disc which has already gone down since yesterday.

i would use some brake cleaner just to be on the safe side, you can get it from any dingbro it's like £4 for the aerosol can and it's not bad, just dowse the rear disk or affected area and that should sort you out

My difficulty is at the minute I don't have access to a trolley jack or axle stands, I don't have any faith in the standard jack!

I don't fancy spraying a load of stuff through the wheels and not getting at the inside of the brake disc, however I will be nipping to my dad's on Sunday so should be able to get at it properly.

As long as the general consensus is I don't need to be getting new pads on there asap....

I wouldn't bother.

Coppaslip grease is intended for use on braking components, and a tiny smear like you describe won't make any difference at all, and will soon burn off.

(It's not as if the rear brakes were any use for slowing down anyway  )

Thanks for all the replies.

Braking and handbrake function has not changed at all the last few days and it does seem to be burning away.
