Fumes inside car, can you help please?

Featured Replies

I bought the car only a few months ago with the current MOT which runs out in August I think, but from all the paperwork there is no mention of anything like that, plus the garage i serviced it at said no leak from exhaust or blowing anywhere and it does sound very quiet but your idea is an excellent one and i will do that...thank you!

Should be cheap too. If an MOT station charges £35 for the whole MOT they should be able to do a tenth of the test for half that price :)

Well just got a local MOT place who lifted it up. No exhaust leaks are apparent or anything else. He did see that the driveshaft was leaking oil/grease which could be chucking it up onto the exhaust but he said it's a job for a Skoda dealer to do...that frightens me to death sounds like a BIG BUCK job...

EDIT:

well called the garage who has serviced the car and they recon they can change the Gater on driveshaft (88 quid plus VAT) i found one on Ebay for 2.99 ..anyway they gonna do it tomorrow and see what happens after that. I do hope this was the problem and it now stops. I will let you guys know either way.

Genuine gaiters (from Skoda dealer, GSF or Eurospares) are worth the extra over Fleabay.

Any competent local garage will be able to change them.

yup fleabay ones are cak, and the split (bolt up style) will come undone and not hold the grease inside

UPDATE,

been to the garage, they changed the fuel and pollen filters as well as the driveshaft gaiter which was leaking some grease. All else is dry and oil free.

It's been a week and all fuel and other smells have subsided but I am still getting the original smells coming in and am now at the end of my tether.

One thing I have noticed is that my engine smells when hot from the outside of the car! this is the same smell that is coming inside the car when hot...why does the engine smell so strong? I am almost at the point of giving up and selling the car but it drives so well and i have spent so much money on it, it just seems so sad to do this. If someone can tell my why this engine smells I would be sooooooo happy!

As many have already suggested, could be just a leak in the breather pipework.

I had identical symptoms (running fine, more noticeable when stationary, smell outside of the car, goes away with the vents on recirc etc.). It was a split pipe, the one which connects to the Y pipe and routes under the inlet manifold.

It was right at the connection on the hidden side of the pipe, so I only noticed it by moving the pipework to open the split up.

I know it has already been suggested but it might be worth giving them a thorough check yourself before totally losing the rag with your motor.

Eat less beans = less in cabin fumes.. oh wait, you mean exhaust fumes?

Sorry
