TDI Smoking

Hello everyone. I have a 2000 octavia 1.9tdi.It has suddenly started smoking really badly. The reoad disappears behind and oil is literally running out of the exhaust.I suspect that the turbo has gone and allowing oil into exhaust, but before spending loads of money on it,could there be any other cause of these symptoms?Yours Rob

I am afraid it looks that your turbo gave up. Just check the breather pipe from the rocker cover to inlet air pipe if there is any oil,but that would burn in the cylinders and gave a lot of blue smoke.

Most likely to be the seals in the turbo :-(

Thanks for your replies.I will definately be changing the turbo, will i have to replace the cat as well as it must be soaked in oil.Rob

When you do the turbo make sure they also change the oil feed and return pipes and they may as well clean out the pipework and intercooler while they're at it.

On the CAT front see how it does and if it becomes a problem, just put a pipe in where the cat was.

Diesels don't need as a CAT as Mark has hinted at, so rather than replacing your CAT If required, as that will cost $$$$, just get a section of pipe put in instead

What colour is the smoke? Blue or white indicates lubricating oil; black is soot from over-fuelling.

What is the lubricant consumption? I've seen cases of sudden turbo oil seal failure where the consumption has gone to about 1l / mile, and an associated "James Bond" smokescreen for several hundred yards behind the car.

Also, has the oil filter recently been changed? If so, is it secure? DAMHIKT!

Yes there is a "james Bond"smokescreen and oil consumption must be at least 1 litre per mile.If you rev it,oil

Yes there is a "james Bond"smokescreen and oil consumption must be at least 1 litre per mile.If you rev it,oil is running out of the exhaust. It has had regular oil changes with VAG long life oil and has done 150k.When the turbo seals go,does all the oil go down the exhaust or could it go into the inlet system? could the intercooler be full of oil?I ask this because, years ago i was driving an old ford p100 TD which started running on its own oil and wouldnt slow down. This happened because the engine was very worn and oil travelled up the breather pipe into the turbo.the engine ran un this oil un regulated and would probably have gone bang had i not stalled it in gear.

Hi folks, after some thought , I have ordered a turbo from Europarts . Apparently it comes complete with a manifold !! has anyone got experience of fitting these ?? any advice , looks tricky to say the least.

Any thoughts welcomed.

Cheers Rob.

Take a look at http://briskoda.net/forums/topic/178666-cleaning-the-vanes-on-a-tdi-turbo/page__p__2151092__fromsearch__1#entry2151092.

It also gives a list of the parts you need to do the job. Make sure you change the oil feed pipe for the turbo. Just because the turbo seal is peeing oil doesn't mean that the feed pipe isn't restricted. If you look at the warranty info for the new turbo, it may even specify this as a requirement.

I did this a while back. It is not as bad as I thought it might be. EGR pipework off, inlet manifold off

undo exhaust pipe, remove turbo pipework, remove exhaust manifold.

I filled the oil hole with oil when I refitted to ensure it started off with some oil in it.

Turbo is FUBAR then. :(

Since the engine hasn't done a "runaway" (congrats on saving the P100; most folk just panic when that happens), I think it's just the exhasut side seals that are blown.

There probably isn't much, if any, oil in the intercooler, but you'll have the pipes off at one end anyway to change the turbo, so it won't hurt or take long to check.

The other questions were in hope it was something cheaper.
