Quite a few things to answer as i've been away for the weekend 'running it in'

Clocked the magic 1000Km this morning so I can start to open it up.

Therefore, as yet I don't know what the performance is like and economy has been pretty poor at 43Mpg avg. All fairly common on a brand new diesel. I'd only really start looking at economy and performance after the first 1500 miles.

Bickertons of Sheffield. I can't really comment on as my only dealings with them were the 10 minutes when they delivered the car to work. They've dealt with our fleet manager up until then.

As for the modding... I dont think i'll bother. Doesn't matter what I do to it, it'll always feel slow compared to my other car and although the spoliers look good I think it looks distinctive enough without

whoops ...there is a running-in proceedure ?

not got that far in the handbook (as clear as mud in translated CZ ,how do I lock the thing most securely , the handbook is not clear)

I was always taught not to be too gentle with a new diesel, to be sure of getting the best performance out of it later. by all means drive gently untill warm , and drive gently or allow to idle for a minute after hard driving before shutting down , good practice with any high compression /turbo engine

Personally I would never drive an engine hard until the components are all bedded in. It's simple enough to know when this is on a TDi as the fuel consumption will be rubbish until such time. I'm still only getting 46mpg on my 45 mile motorway journey to work. I can feel it loosening up all the time though and i'm gradually pushing the envelope a bit.

If you want to know if this is the right way to do things or not then my only evidence is my previous TDi PD car which went back with 147,000 miles on the clock. It was run in like this and then treated gently every morning until the oil warmed up. The rest of the time it was driven hard. During it's last service interval it had used LESS than 1/2 litre of oil

Very true. My 51 plate Octy vRS has done 28K now. It's still 'loosening up'

It just seems to get better every time I take it out. There are schools of thought that reckon a car's not really run in till it's done about 30,000 miles.

I think that's the difference between run in and running at optimum. I would say that engines are probably running at optimum somewhere between 10,000 and 30,000 miles. Running in should only take a few thousand at most.

:) Can only go by my experience with tractors . which are always used to the maximum straight out of the box (once warm ) admitedly they only rev to 2200-2800 but if the first job from the factory dictates flat out all day, that is what the engine has to do .
