Fitting new exhaust on my vRS

Featured Replies

This saturday i am planning to replace my standard exhaust with a blueflame system, it's from the CAT back.

I have had a read on the forum about fitment is it a right pain in the ass without a ramp? I was planning doing it myself with axcel stands etc but having read a few posts it seems like it's alot of hassel. Any opinions welcomed.

Paul

I paid my local ATS around £30 to fit mine, was the best £30 I've spent, it looked a right pain the arse.

I did mine with one side on a raised Kerb :giggle:

Was a right ****! Check with a local exhaust place to see what they will charge, as mike says well worth £30ish

I was meant to be getting a shot of a ramp and garage at the weekend but its fallen through :-( , so was planning attempting it with axcel stands, surely it can't be that hard?lol.

I will prob end up puting it somewhere has it has just started snowing where i am :-( , am i right in thinking there's a mark on the standard system to indicate where to cut it off? Or am i talking *******s.

Paul

Pay someone mate,

Ive just broke a car with an after market zorst and to get the thing off I had to remove the rear beam as I couldnt get the 2 sections apart. might be easier if you cutting it clean but still too much hassle really. for the sake of £50<.

so was planning attempting it with axcel stands, surely it can't be that hard?lol.

Hi Paul wonder who's exhaust you may be fittng

It is not that the fitting is hard buddy in fact it is easy, but you may not be able to get the car high enough to allow you to angle the centre pipe over the rear beam. Unless you have a very extended trolley jack with long axles stands. Give it a go but if you can't then you will have to refit std exhaust back on to get a garage to do it and bear in mind the std exhaust needs cutting to remove so is a little risky if you get stuck.

I managed to get it off with ramps and racing rolley jack with high axle stands so yes can be done. My knuckles and elbows, shoulders and back know about it for sure...

As the weather is getting worse up hear i think ill end up putting it somewhere to get fitted, but if i do decide to fit it myself one clean cut should that get the standard system over the rear beam? Or can i go wild with a angle grinder and cut it into a few bits to get it out? ( I wn't need the old exhaust)

Where do the performance systems join from the backbox to the middle pipe which side of the rear beam if you know what i mean?

its gettting the old stuff off thats the pain....

pay pay pay its worth it unless you have a pit/lift to get proper access to remove the exhaust, the stock is 1 piece and as stated a clean cut to remove from the beam is the way ahead if you do brave it.

I am in two minds wether to have ago or not lol i really don't have the patience if a job is a pain in the ass. Ill get a look underneath the car at some point today and decide if i want to try it i do like a good challenge though lol

if you dont have patience and dont have a good jack that can go high with good axle stands and or ramps then forget it....

trust me (and the others on here) its not a technical job, but its fiddly and a pain as often the existing bolts are fused/stuck.

O well just been round to a few exhaust places in my area and guess what none of them will fit my exhaust for me! Just gave me some crapy excuse how its not a standard exhaust etc etc plus everyone up here in inverness in misreable lol, looks like ill be atempting it myself :-(

try local garages etc, not the mainstream fitting places like quicks&it.

My local cheapo tyre exhaust bay place wanted £50 to refit my milltek for me

Yeah there is a few up here i can try problem is none of them open on a saturday and thats the only day i can manage, but ill try around and see, cheers mate

Well i can't belive this just had a quick 10minute brake from work so thought i would phone round a few local garages that i have used before to see if they would fit it,

To my surprise evryone of them said no it wasn't something they would do! I mean wtf lol as soon as i said it wasn't a standard exhaust thats when they back tracked and said they wouldn't do it.

I have one more option left a local mobile mechanic stays across the road from me so thought i would ask him tonight see if he would do it.

Where are you based?

Inverness mate.

Was just wondering if there were any custom exhaust/tuning place around, maybe someone else will have an idea.

Good thinking yeah never thought of that there's one in elgin which is about forty odd miles from me worth a try suppose.

If you do end up doing it yourself give yourself way longer than you think, tell the mrs you won't be going anywhere or shopping...... :giggle:

Be patient and plan to have access to spare transport to get emergency parts.

That way if you have no issues you will be chuffed

Well i got the exhaust on today :-) finally found a garage that would fit it. I payed them 40quid to fit it which i think is quite good as they were at it for over a hour and a half lol.

First impressions are very good nice low rumble at idle nothing to chavy which was what i was after. Only thing i have noticed is the exhuast sits quite low i think my hangers are shot i did notice it a wee bit with the standard exhaust but its more noticeable with the blueflame. Is it just a case of fitting new hangers?

So thanks to bowders1 (mark) for selling me the exhaust its in fantastic condition and all the bits i needed came with it aswell :-).

Paul

yeah get new hangers. Mine sits a little low. They do sound sweet and isn't too offensive. I'm happy with mine.

  • Author

Yeah they do sound really good, nothing to chavy,

Are the hangers just a dealer only part mike?

dunno I've not bothered doing mine. Would have thought tps would do them. A lot of people have just used a cable tie and left the old hanger there as a fail safe.

  • Author

Ill try a couple of cable ties first see how i get on.

Hi Paul glad you are pleased with it.

The exhaust sat perfect on my car

2 reasons for the exhaust sitting low.

1. rubber hangers are shot

2. exhaust centre did not fit it correctly.

This is common as they may not know how low or high you want the backbox to sit under the bumper. To adjust exhaust, the garage need to lossen the centre clamp that fit's to your cat and someone else needs to twist the rear box up to where you want it sitting, and then retighten the centre section. Job done

You could do that yourself, i did it many times

trust me that will do it.
