A few Octavia I TDI questions

Featured Replies

Hi All

Just bought a 2002 Octavia Ambeinte Estate wondering if any one can help or point me in the right direction with a few bits;

  1. osr door won't open, I have removed the door panel (without damaging it) i have seen some posts that suggest smashing the plastic of the motor to get at a release lever any other ideas?
  2. The gear lever doesn't return to the centre
  3. best/cheapest way to up the performace from 90bhp preferably in the devon/somerset area.

I hope this makes sense as its the first time i have ever used a forum.

Cheers

Mark

Welcome :-)

1. not sure

2. I guess there are some centering springs somewhere, of which one will have broken

3. Maybe new / larger injectors (from the 110), and remap

not sure if this is right but i'm starting to think that i may have a problem with the Convenience System Control Unit as i have since found that the tailgate is not locking with the rest of the doors and the fuel filler cap won't close is this common?

The filler cap is just controlled by a latch next to the filler cap, I don't believe it is part of the convenience system, you should be able to access this from inside the side (easy on the estate).

Tailgate not locking, might be a break in the loom or a failure for the motor in the boot lock....

The CCU does control the filler release and tailgate.

A couple of things to try...

1. Disconnect battery for 10 minutes - sometimes this will cure CCU problems.

2. You can often open a locked door by applying a voltage directly to the lock motor (Grey and Yellow wires leading to lock). Use a 9v battery (assuming you don't have a current limited 12v power supply). Just make the connection for a second or so. You can hear if it is working.

Answering question 3)

Depends what you want really. If you're content with c. 110/115bhp then I expect a good remap will get you that. Decat and stainless exhaust maybe an extra 5bhp. If you want to go further, you'll be finding the injectors and turbo will be restricting you. 110tdi injectors will give you a little extra headroom, but they run out of puff at 140-150bhp. .216 nozzles will open up the doors, but you'll need a bigger turbo in both cases, so budget for a four-figure sum to get to that kind of level.

The gear lever problem could be something similar to what i had in my mk2 golf gti. At the bottom of the stick there may be a round nylon bush which wears away, costs a few quid for a new one and takes about an hour to replace. Worth looking into.

With regards to your performance, well thats quite simple. I had a polo tdi 90 estate a few years ago which i fitted with a £75 ebay tuning box. Took 10 mins to fit and gave 120 bhp in standard tune. (depending on your engines condition and mileage). When tuned right up it agve about 145 bhp and made the car go like a rocket. Celtic tuning quote about 130 bhp for their remap but thatl cost you about 300 quid. Also remember youll get massive gains in torque which the 90 engine really lacks.

I remapped my 90 recently. Rolling road figures before and after show a healthy boost.

97hp as bog standard, 123hp and 211lb/ft after.

The car is really smooth and still chugs away in high gears and low revs like the standard car and has none of the smoking issues that affect tuning boxes

Ive got the door open, with the interior panel off I tapped the motor while locking and unlocking the door until the motor started making a noise, then I used a supply from the cigar lighter to the grey and yellow wires which took the dead lock off and unlocked the door. For now I have taken the door off the central locking.

I have some 110 injectors for sale, PM me if you are interested.

Hi All

  1. The gear lever doesn't return to the centre

Mark

The centering of the gear lever is controlled by a spring which is visible after you lift up the gaiter around the gear lever. Thanks to tomsimmons who included some pictures today, I have included one of his here. The spring is the one that wraps around the small white sleeve and has one of its ends bent at a right-angle. I guess yours is broken.

Hmm, steal my pic but no one answers my questions eh eh eh? ;)

Is there a reference/code for this shifter set up? This is from "fiddled with" 53 Ambiente TDi, but my 02 plate Elegance has a shifter that has a nylon ball at the bottom.

Tom, I believe the picture I nicked was of a O2J shifter as used on most 5 speed transmissions. The only one I know with the ball is the O2M transmission used on the 6 speed box fitted to ASZ engined cars - the 130 PD diesel set up for example. It could be a ball version was used on early cars but I am not aware of it.

Mike

Edit: Just looked at mine again and it too has a nylon ball although not too obvious. The white part in your photo is larger and ball shaped. The mystery deepens. The centring spring is still very easily seen.

The one in my Elegance looks like the one on this You Tube vid (www.youtube.com/watch?v=tp9ggefOjAE) for aligning the linkage, and is 5 speed. I've and ASV engine.

The Haynes seems to talk of there being 3 boxes/shifters, but isn't clear.

PS

Sorry to the OP, didn't mean to pinch your thread.

Can you confirm if this is an O2M gear change?

IMG_0027.JPG

its is strange as it appears that there is a spring that offers resistance when moving the lever from side to side but this doesn't appear to be what centralises the lever could the problem be nearer the gear box?

thanks for all the help so far. Also am i posting this in the correct place?

I can't confirm it is an O2M I'm afraid. What I can tell you is that it looks very similar to mine, I haven't got picture here to compare so going from memory.

From the Haynes, the diagram looking like that says O2M, but also from Haynes it seems that after 05/99 the O2J might have become very similar if not identical to the O2M. The only difference possibly being that O2J is 5 speed while O2M is 6 speed.

Did that help?

As for centreing spring, I'm just trying to recall but I think when I disconnected my actuator cables in the engine bay the gear leaver was free to go where ever you wanted it to, and there it stayed. That would suggest the springs are at the gearbox end - which is not what you wanted to hear.

Can anyone sugest where the spring might be in the o2j that centres the gear lever?

The large spring on the left is the left-right pressure spring. If you look at the area circled you can see the limits for that centre position are set by the part between the spring ends. My guess is the underside of this part is worn pushing the ball arm up and the position to the right.

The spring shape also affects the left-right centre position
