Detailing help

Featured Replies

Hi all,

I always look after my cars, hand wash with AG shampoo, quality washmit, leather, autoglym SRP buffed with microfibre cloth.

I want to go a step further with the immaculate fabia VRS I have just bought.

I dont want to research detailing, it seems very subjective!

I'm looking for a lazy mans guide to a shiny car!

So, if I apply collinite 476 wax after the autoglym SRP, when do I need to re polish with Autoglym SRP?

di I need to strip it back, @ if so what with?

I'm sticking with the autoglym polish as I have literally gallons of it.

Cheers all.

I would go for a megs shampoo, gold or NXT as it offers more lubrication on the panels than AG.

I use AG SRP and then extra gloss, then i apply the 476.

After this i then apply the 476 every couple of weeks to keep the protection up. Then once or twice a year clay the car, de-tar, machine any swirls etc out and repeat the AG and 476 combo.

Thanks mate,

Is the extra gloss the autoglym stuff?

Yeah Auto Glym stuff, gold label. It is a clear fluid and is basically a sealant. Wipe it on, leave for 30-60min and then buff off!

Just one extra thing to note, shine comes from the sun passing straight through the lacquer hitting the paintwork and reflecting back, any scratches on the lacquer will haze the paintwork and make the sun's job more difficult, therefore loose the 'leather' and invest in a Waffle Weave Drying Towel and another bucket.........

Good lad Dave!

Your current wash regime seems pretty good but I'd agree with Baker21, a waffle weave or microfibre towel is better and adopting the 'two bucket method' is a must.

The car is currently wearing Collinite 476 and I'll try and get another layer on before you pick it up on Sunday as the water is not beading quite as tightly as it used to.

It was polished by DA (Dual Action machine polisher) using Menzerna polishes around August/September last year and since it's sliver it shows literally no swirl marks at all at the moment. Even before I machined it I wouldn't say there were many swirls evident.

I'd say that using Super Resin on it in it's current state would be a waste of time. A good claying session to get rid of the winter tar and then a coat or two of 476s will leave it looking great.

I also give it a spray over with some Zaino Z8 after a wash to give the paintowrk a bit of 'bling' too.

I just hope you're not disappointed with it when you see it in the flesh! :giggle:

Hi Steven

I'm sure I'll be pleased with it, it looks lovely in the pics

So,

1. Pre-rinse & wash with decent shampoo & lambswool mit

2. dry with waffle weave

3. Clay bar & lube spray

4. Autoglym SRP

5. Autoglym extra gloss

6. Collinite 476S

7. zaino Z8 to finish

Cool, my fuel costs will be slashed, I'll be cleaning it more than I drive it lol :D

Thanks for all the advice fellas.

Sounds about right.

To be honest, I'm just an amateur polisher but guys like Baker21 are virtually professionals so I'd take their advice.

Personally, for a weekly wash I'd go with;

1- Wash with two-bucket method & lambswool mit

2- Dry (using a drying aid like Meguiars Last Touch can be helpful too)

3- Quick spritz with Z8 if you've got an extra 5minutes. I also find dressing tyres makes a massive difference to how clean a car appears.

For a big spring time clean I'd go with what you set out above (although not sure the Extra Gloss is strictly neccessary).

That should last you through the summer (maybe a top up or two of 476 if you have time) and then before winter I'd just do a wash, clay and a couple of layers of wax to get it protected again for winter.

Cheers Steve

I've just ordered a snow foam gadget for regular washes.

I think on balance I'll not bother with the extra gloss, pretty sure it'll look great without it.

The extra gloss seals in what the SRP has done, ie polish and fill.

Wouldn't the wax do that too?

I always thought wax or sealant, no need for both?
