Help please new owner !

Featured Replies

Hi all

Very very happy new owner of a 2002 Superb 2.0 Classic.

Had an Omega before and love this Skoda, so much space !!

Just got a problem though with the interior lights, the front ones dont work

I have read about water ingress but can find no evidence of that anywhere, carpets for example are bone dry

Just wondered if I can please get some advice or if there is a forum member local to me in Long Eaton who I could take it to in order to get it sorted?

Any help much appreciated and love the forum too

Cheers

Martyn

Also the drivers door doesn't unlock with the remote central locking

This will 99.9% certain be down to water ingress, just because the (top) of the carpet is dry does not mean that the car has not leaked, be it now or previously.

Isn't this the petrol engine though? I thought the 2.0l diesels came out in 2005, but then, I don't know anything :S

2.0TDi was introduced late 05 early 06.

The cause of no front interior lights is dodgy wiring joints under the front passenger carpet. My 2.5TDi has never had water ingress, but the wiring has still deteriorated so that the front interior lights (and others) do not work.

Just been out to it and all interior lights work Inc door handle catvision etc just NOT the one near the windscreen

My post above gives you the answer. It is wiring joints deterioration, 99% certain.

So, do the petrol models suffer with the dreaded water ingress? I would have thought not because of the different lay out :S

You don't need water ingress to get the problem. My 2.5TDi has never had water ingress issues, I keep an eye on that. But I have still lost most of the interior lighting. Only the two rear courtesy lights work.

One way to extend courtesy and door lamps and switches life (while they're working, or after you fix them) is to replace them with LEDs early on in the life of the car. LEDs take a lot less current and any current flow related corrosion/switch overload and wear issues appear much later or never.

I have to warn you that most white LEDs in the market are quite short-lived - you will replace them more often than bulbs despite sellers claims. On the plus side, you can actually light up the interior 2x-4x better than with the bulbs for 1/2 current draw.

Warm white LEDs for best light, Cool white LEDs for the cool factor, I must say I use the cool ones even though I can see the warm ones are giving out better light :)

All of the interior lights are switched by FETs in the CCM. The door microswitches don't carry lamp current. (How do you make a lamp dim with a microswitch?)

rotodiesel.

Corossion in presence of water depends on current -> half current = half corossion.

FETs also die occassionally, if you run them at lower than nominal current the failure rate goes down exponentially.

Also, last time I checked, the dimmming of interior lights was done by a separate unit (PWM modulator in Conv Unit), and switching of door entry lights by the actual door switches - they do carry current. I confirmed this on 2003 A6 wiring diagrams No. 43/4 and 43/14 for doors and 43/12 and 43/19 for lights :dull:

hi there

im a new superb owner

mine is a tale of woe also

i thought there was no leak because the carpets were dry

ON TOP

but they will be damp, if not soaked underneath

even if they are slightly damp, the wiring will deteriorate and possibly ruin the ccm

there are several wiring joints taped to the ns footwell loom and as iv found they cause trouble

even if they are still crimped

mine are greenish but crimped, but ive been told this can still cause lack off items working, green is bad.

but i have found someone else who has posted pics and destructions on this site showing the rear carpets up also, with what looks like repairs too, im trying to contact that member for an answer.

i will be cutting out the crimps and soldering in, then insulating then repairing the pollen housing where the leaks start from.
