Evo long term Yeti

Featured Replies

I can't remember exact details, but Evo mag (purveyors of everything rapid and automotively sexual) have a Yeti 1.8 TSI on their long term fleet.

This month they went to a tuner to drive a reader's Yeti - chipped/tuned to 225BHP. The tuner reckoned it was the easiest gain he had achieved in a long time (163 BHP standard?) and reliable etc.

I can't remember the company, but seem to remember that the cost was minimal. I'll take another peek tonight.

I think you'll find they produce a bit more than the quoted 160bhp from the factory anyway. The Yeti 1.8TSi with a remap with a bit of a beast! It's like a Golf GTi 4x4. Pretty awesome!

BUT does the higher road clearance and (probably?) softer set up, make it a bit more rolly?

Yeah it will have more bodyroll than say Golf GTi/Octavia vRS but compared to other crossovers the Yeti is suprisingly sports car like to drive on the road. The ride is never harsh but it is firm and well dampened so you know when you've gone over one of Surreys ridiculous pot holes (think thermonuclear weapons test site) but it doesn't shunt the vehicle so bad that your fillings fall out, it gives you a reassuring feeling that you're connected to the road.

Actually in a previous magazine EVO put their Yeti on a track and found it gave the same lap time as a Focus ST and it was actually quicker around the track than the racey little Clio 197 or whatever it is called now. Impressive stuff, and it goes offroad well. Not many cars can do that!

Well I thought it was good when I drove it - didn't rag the nuts off it, but it felt good.

I know Surrey's roads (? - cart tracks more like) well - I always thought when I lived there that the crap roads must form a large part of the justification for so many people to own chelsea tractors!!

Lucky for me, the Wiltshire ones around where I now live are much better.

While I enjoy reading about a non-Evo car in Evo (namely their Yeti) I don't glean much for my prospective buy - it WILL be diesel and probably the least powerful engine on offer!

Is there any tuning potential for the 1.6 CR and can changes be made to the Greenline without completely scrapping the good points? Surely the 20mm reduction in ground clearance might improve the already good handling!

I'm 99% certain the EVO Yeti was wearing some really sticky trackday tyres to achieve that lap time though. I will have to read back a few issues to check.

I am 100% sure. At least it makes a change from the usual EVO never never land stuff about 'how I upgraded my Murcielago's brakes for a very reasonable £7k and found I was saving up to half a second a lap. Money well spent then ! Next month...how I blew a shedload on a reasssuringly expensive aero upgrade '

Wasn't it fitted with toyo r888's

Yes it was running semi slicks - road legal but not great in he wet! Still, it shows that as an overall package it has good potential. :-)

And boy, a 1.8tsi with 220+ bhp? Just imagine that! :giggle:;)

The R888's are over rated, dont rate them that well for track use so i think any decent tyre would come close to the time put up with them on B)

My 170 will have 226bhp and something like 278 lbs torque... er , yes, slightly tweaked. Standard Yoko tarmac tyres though.

It was on a second set of wheels shod with track tyres - but it is heartening to see die hard performance car journalists singing the praises of a Yeti for its practicality AND ability to entertain.

I competely forgot to check last night as to the tuning company and cost.

Now thats not just a remap is it?.

The 170's map to about 190-200bhp, so i guess you are changing the turbo?.

K04 kits for the latest 2.0tsi engines (gti etc.) bolt right onto the 1.8tsi......... i will let you mind run riot with that idea  (hint, 300bhp+ with very little lag)

Bare in mind that some companies quote unrealistic figures for stage one remaps. ;-)

I'll check - it was, I think, just a remap, not a chip upgrade or any components changed and it was rolling road tested in the Evo journos presence.

But on what dyno?! ;)

It was on Dunlop Direzza DZ03G 'track day' tyres in, IIRC, 225/45 17.

Are you sure?

The CR/PD 170 TDI usually maps to 200/205bhp with c. 300+ lb ft of torque, unless you take the DPF off when you can get around 5%-10% more power/torque.

The gains to 225bhp by DMS on the 1.8TSI Yeti are mighty impressive; goes to show how softly tuned this engine is in the first place.

It was purely a remap.

Cost was £594 - not cheap.

Ben at Shark Performance is cheaper, even when he isn't offering a deal.....

Well I'm no expert, but £600 for 70bhp seems reasonable...

Hmmm, I'd rather go with a superior remap for less

Shark rules. :D
