Is it possible to have the DSG re-coded to allow key removal in neutral

Featured Replies

When I have her in with either Skoda or that independentant VCDS thinngy boyo getting the doors set to unlock alltogether rather than needing a second plip

You can do the door unlock thing through Maxidot

I did not get Maxidot as it was a dealer ordered car.

It is the dang blinking nuisence of requiring to select Park before key removal that is currently bugging me.

Neutral = fine, as I always use the parking brake.

The same parking brake which acts on the rear disc brakes which will cool and shrink, potentially allowing the car to move?

Don't be daft, leave it in gear, it's designed like that for a reason.

Stevoraith,

Seeing as I have put over 240,000 miles on the ould (heavy) Galaxy with (weedy) discs on the back, and always parked in neutral using the parking/hand brake without incident, I will discount your comment in respect of this arrangment being unsatisfactory. :S

Anyway the farmer in me would always chock a front wheel in against a kerb if it was (i)either very steep or (ii) very slippery/icy.

Anyway Anyway any I always winch the handbrake on (without ratchetting the pawl) the induced stretch in the cables will allow for the cooling relaxation within the brakes.

How do you think cars with a manual gearbox are left safely???

I remember,I were driving der ould Citroen BX with the handbrake on the front discs, from 1993 for 100,000 miles (& bought with 91,690 miles on the clock) without problems forby.

But more to the point

IS it possible to get the electronic safety interlock overridden, between the gear selector & the key.

Only for neutral mind.

My Citroen Xantia (the successor to the venerable BX) had front wheel parking brake too - I never understood why they would add such complication of getting cables to steered wheels! Citroen I suppose!

Can't see that you would be able to modify DSG to allow key-out in neutral only. I would see it as being something that you would have to "break" rather than disable.

Out of interest what do you have against leaving it in "P"? What harm does it do? Or are you just a rebel who doesn't like being told what to do?:rofl:

An old dog and new tricks I suppose.

I have trained myself down through the years to always but always select neutral when stopped, even if on reflection I slip her into first or reverse due to poor handbrake/steep hill/frozen handbrake cables.

So I find that I am in neutal and the key wont come out of the ignition lock, and nearly break the blinking gear selector off before I remember I need my foot on the brake first.

I do a fair bit of stop start driving around an urban area with work so am constantly getting in & out.

In my previous car I had it down to a slick routine, into neutral, foot brake, apply handbrake as coming to a halt and smoothly roll out the door with key in hand.

Simples.

Yes I suspected it would be more a case of "breaking" the electronic factory set up as opposed to a manufacturer facilited option.

Exactly as Mute says, in gear. Very bad practice to leave a car in neutral. I saw an Exige roll down the hill in the Knockhill paddock and miss my car by inches before imbedding itself into a 4x4.

It had been left in neutral with the handbrake on.

I've never ever left my car in neutral when parking since.

(And if any of you lot have suffered with a BMW handbrake you'd know not to trust the bloody things!)

And definitely don't do it near a railway line, because if it rolls onto the track, as the consequences aren't worth thinking about!!! emoticon-0145-shake.gif
