help water leak

Featured Replies

hi i have got a water leak and i dont know where its coming from the back foot wells are soaked help someone :(

It's coming through the pollen filter housing in the plenum chamber (engine bay) do a search for "water ingress" on here, it's been covered MANY times before

Plenum chamber flooded? Bonnet cable bulkhead rubber grommet leaking? Sunroof track drains blocked?

hi i have checked all of them. my car hasn't got a sun roof. i have notice my floor gets wet(soaked) when it rains could the door seals be leaking? and if the Plenum chamber is leaking would the water be going in to the back foot wells ?? :S

Yes, the water could very well run there, there's nothing stopping it running there. Yes, it is also possible that the door seals are leaking but the other things are more usual.

It's not the actual pollen filter, it's the housing underneath and VW's rubbish foam seal that leaks. This usually only happens if the plenum chamber bungs are clogged and the water builds up before sloshing in through the faulty foam seal.

It then has nowhere to go but through the channels to the back passenger footwell, and the wiring loom and CCM unit. Stupid, crazy design :o

It could be the door seal too. Try hosing the windows and see if the water runs on the inside.

I've learned all this over the last 4 weeks since buying my Superb. I've now had the housing sealed and the chamber cleaned and bungs removed. Good luck with it

hi fella

congrats !

you are now officially a fully paid up member of the submariners club

the pollen filter housing under the bonnet, start there, unless the doors arent shut !

what happens is

water will get in very secretively usually under the pollen filter housing (the black plastic bit)

it can get in through the door seals and sunroof drains and a poorly fitted screen , BUT 9 times outa ten the pollen housing/plenum housing is the culprit

REMEDY

lift bonnet

remove the plastic scuttle panel

remove battery

see if there is a swamp festering in the bulk head

there are two rubber grommets that will more than likely be blocked,CLEAN THEM and let out the water it will drain on the floor

THEN UNBOLT THE POLLEN HOUSING,held on with three nuts

this has two seals

1 the outer that fails, there is a modified part available from VW

2 the inner sponge seal that wont stop anything EVER!

i have the exact same problem and i am repairing still as we speak

there are some important bits that live under the carpets the convenience ecu the wiring and the multi connectors

if water gets anywhere near them expect big probs and big bills

im an ex mercedes technician so im used to this sort of thing, it is common amongst the ubber pricey s classe

BUT IM SURPRISED ITS COMMON ON THE PASSAT AND THE A4 AND THE A8 AND THE SUPERB

replace or re seal with a thick bead of bathroom silicone sealant

and refit

remove the passengers seat and lift up the carpet and allow it to drip dry, hold it up with wood and wait a few days before proceeding

it will be sodden and the underlay will hold even more water than the carpet (i was bailing mine out over three days)

you will see that the water comes in from the bulkhead and runs across the entire floor including the rear foot well

there are multiple connectors taped in the wiring loom that is now exposed, THESE ARE PONY!

WHAT you will probably find is the wiring held within the cheap rubber covers has rotted the wires and are no longer connected

causing untold agro and lack of bits working, some of the connectors are earths,or lives,so when water gets near a permanent d.c current electrolysis occurs and bits dont function !

like the electric drivers seat

or the dot matrix

or the boot light

or the puddle lights

or the front courtesy lights

or the remote locking

the central locking

basically all sorts of probs, so check that pollen housing, even if it hasnt got in there it will soon, its inevitable, trust me and countless others

im trying to upload the photos of the damage that i found to help others, and probably you.

PS i have repaired thirteen broken wires in the rear footwell ( so far ) and re soldered them

do it !!

ive now finished this little exercise and all is back together, my god! ive got things working that i didnt know i even had!

let me know what you find
