1.6 WTCC petrols clean pair of heels to 2 litre diesels

Featured Replies

As some of us expected the 1.6 turbo-petrols ie BMW and Chevy are making around 315 hp against 2 litre diesels sub 300 hp and zooming off in to the distance.

I think Diesel has still have to carry 20 Kg penalty and that needs removing plus maybe let the diesel have a higher boost pressure ie 3 bar and rev to a few hundred revs higher.

The future is not Garlic Bread but TSI. Come on VAG, get your 1.6 TSI out to the WTCC else it is going to be an embaressing season or open up the regs to allow 2 turbos on diesels, higher pressure etc.

Second meeting of the race season today, ie Zolder, Diesels still slow but Tarquini did the best blocking job I have every seen.

SEAT diesel only producing 280 hp out of their 2 litre diesel.

1.6Ts of BMW and Chevrolet are producing around 315 hp.

let us hope they let the VAG car rev a bit higher and/or have more boost to make it competitive else it will be embaressing for the rest of the season particularly at the tracks that are wide and have long straights!

Well done Huffy, good lead in the championship now, could be a replacement for Andy P.

Word is that SEAT will have the 1.6 TSI engine to replace the 2.0 TDI for Hungary for at least part of the SUNRED team with about 300 hp.

Montiero looking good but need similar power to the Chevys.

They need to drop trying to fit diesal into the grid.

Its apples and stones.

The regs will always favour one or the other. And a straight matchup isnt possible as petrol wins using normal measuring methods.

Well this is what appears to be happening. The diesel has been tremendous over the last few seasons but now direct injection petrols are allowed and they are revving to twice what the diesels do, in a short race format like WTCC, it appears the end of the diesel. The success of SEAT against BMW and Chevy will help support TSI sales across the VAG brands as it will with the Skoda motorsport and soon Polo WRC usage of TSI.

Hopefully the R18 http://www.topgear.com/uk/photos/audi-r18-le-mans-racer-2010-12-13 will mangle the Peugeots again but this is where diesels score not the shorter form.

I wish that the dates of WTCC and BTCC hadn't clashed...grr

The Seat driver in the BTCC race got absolutely creamed by the car that lost control and skided across the track, lucky he was in the left hand drive version else he might be more shaken.

Freddie Barth did OK in the new petrol Leon but I see Tarquini stuck with the TDI for this race but I expect they will transission to the 1.6 petrols over the next few races as they are clearly way quicker than the 2 litre diesels under the rules as they are ie some 30 hp.

Tarquini gets 7th in Qualifying for CZ race although petrol SEATs are still a good second down on GM Cruzes.

Have not seen any figures for the 1.6T engine now but it must be over 300 hp to be where it is.

Only one Diesel in the race and do not know how much longer that will be there at the back of the pack.

Should be intesting and I hope we get the VAG 1.6Ts in BTCC next season.

VAG 1.6T seems as quick as BMW already but still slower than the Cruze, pretty good start.

You'll never ever see a 1.6T in the BTCC. The regs state petrol 2 litre n/a or 2 litre turbo. Nothing else.

Looks like BTCC want to go their own way with relatively cheap 2 litre engines. Still will be over 300 hp but rear wheel drive for the one using the VAG chasis and engine !!!!

Rob Austin announces Audi NGTC engines Headlines - 28 January 2011 By Andrew Abbott - Rob Austin Racing has confirmed that it will be using the VW/Audi Group 2.0 Litre TFSI engine in its BTCC Audi A4 cars. The engines will be prepared by Ric Wood Motorsport at their base in Stockport.

Commenting on the move Rob Austin said, “We are delighted to be working with Ric Wood on this project. We have been associated with Ric for some time now and are very confident that he will provide us with highly competitive engines along with great service”. The cars which are currently in build at GPR Motorsport, are scheduled to be completed before the BTCC Media Day at Silverstone on March 24th where the RWD Audi A4s will be revealed along with the driver line up. Austin further revealed, “We have considered a number of options including the TOCA engine but felt that the Audi A4 should have a VW/Audi group engine and that it should be prepared by someone that we know and trust. We can’t wait for the season to get under way so that we can prove that the decision to go with the Rear Wheel Drive A4 was the right choice”. Commenting on the partnership Ric Wood said, “I am delighted and excited to get the opportunity to show our skills in the BTCC. I feel certain that the Audi A4 with Ric Wood power is going to be the perfect car to demonstrate the effectiveness of the NGTC regulations.”

The Ric Wood built engine got very quickly ditched for the proven (ie reliable ) Lehman tuned engine that the Seat and Golfs use. The only reason the Audi is RWD is that the Stock supplied TOCA gearbox for a logitudinal engine can only be configured for RWD use. And because no A4 has a transverse engine, they couldn't dump a FWD gearbox/engine combination in the space frame NGTC front end due to the regs.

In other words.... when the power increases planned for 2013 come in....... The Audi will have a significant advantage against the FWD motors putting power down. Quite a schrewd move from Rob Austin Racing.

Diesel final run out - THE SEAT TDI LEAVES THE WTCC STAGE

9 Jul 2011

Aleksei Dudukalo is the last of the SUNRED drivers to switch from the SEAT León TDi to the SUNRED León 1.6T that he will drive from the Donington Park event. This change marks the exit of the Spanish turbo diesel car from the WTCC stage, the boards of which she trod for five years, from the 2007 event in Anderstorp, claiming 32 race wins and making motor sport history for being the first diesel car to win FIA World Championships (2008 with Yvan Muller and 2009 with Gabriele Tarquini). And besides securing to world titles, the Muller-Tarquini duo also marked the beginning and the end of this outstanding machine’s racing career, as the Frenchman claimed her first win at Oschersleben in 2007 and the Italian the last one, two-and-a-half months ago at Zolder.
