Bolero SD Card - Problem?

Yes you are right, however to clarify what i am saying...

There are at least 2 different manufacturers of this unit (http://delphi.com/ & http://www.bosch.com/content/language2/html/3506.htm) , there may be more. I assume the basic functional spec is the same, however it is fair to assume there are some differences in the parts used and one of these differneces is that the SD card reader in the Delphi model can read a 32gb card, but has a limit on the number of files (I assume to speed the reading up, and I guess they assume that most people don't have 32gb of music or won't tranfer it all at once).

Your assumption that the are differences in firmware is correct, but that isn't to say that the firmware is transferable from one machine to another. I guess what i am saying is that just because the Bosch unit reads 32gb, that doesn't automatically mean that the Delphi unit can be flashed with the Bosch software and everything will be sorted.

I am pursuing this with the delaer, but as mentioned below we want to prove or disprove whether the differences are as we assume.

To reassure you I am still of the opinion that it states it can read 32gb cards therefore the inference is that it will read all of the 32gb card. Also I did not invest in the MDI cable because i was assured by the sales guy (no longer there) that the card read 32gb.

As always I will keep you informed.

Sorry, that it what I meant - two hardware platforms that are more than likely to have a different firmware for the different hardware.

I still think it is a firmware issue as it is a limit on the number of files. For example, if we put 2 15Gb MP3s on the card would it read them both?? That would prove it can read all of the card. The number of files it can index and store will be a firmware issue I reckon.

Good luck pursuing this, I would assist but my HU is not the original for my car, so whilst it is under a year old it will not be covered by any warranty.

hi guys,

just a quick question, i have on order a 2011 octavia vrs and i was wondering if i could use an sd hc card for my music mp3 files?

i am unusre of the difference of the sd card and sd hc but i saw a decent one for the price today and wondered if i have purchased could i use it or does it need to be the sd card instead?

thanks again

SDHC and SD are pretty compatible, SDHC def works in your SD slot for your new car. They look identical, save for the HC suffix on the label.

the HC stands for High Capacity, it came in when SD cards got to 4Gb capacity. You can, in fact, buy SDXC cards now (Extreme Capacity!) running to 128Gb, but they're eye-wateringly expensive and give the problems you've no doubt read about in this thread, are almost certainly not fit for purpose in a Bolero. 16Gb or 32Gb if you feel bold will see you right.

If you want maximum capacity, perhaps look into a portable hard drive connected via MDI (if indeed you ordered that extra)

thanks Aljado.

unfortunately never ordered mdi, so i guess i could buy the sdhc card then to use for my music then?

cheers mate

See my post on the 12th April ref my e-mails on this topic to Skoda CZ.

As suggested by Andyvee, I re-emailed my new 'friend' Vladimir as follows :-

Subject: Re: SD Card on a Bolero

Thank you for your reply. Can you ask your technical department to respond to the following points :-

1. The whole purpose of a 32gb card is to carry a large number of files. Skoda have have caused customers to buy expensive 32gb cards but have failed to inform them that less than half the files which typically fit on the card can be used. What is the point of having the Bolero read a 32gb card if half the files are unusable?

2. Older Bolero radios read all the files on a 32gb card but they take a very long time to read the files from the card. An upgrade to the software/firmware was introduced to speed up this prolonged loading time. It appears that in correcting this problem the 2000 file limit has been introduced. Will Skoda treat this as a warranty issue and fix it under warranty?

3. Are there any plans to fix this problem or compensate customers who have been miss led by the information in the Skoda manuals?

Thanks again

Malcolm

Dear Mr. Hall,

Thank you for your email.

The new 2011 Bolero radio unit is being made by another manufacturer than the older. It can read data from 32GB SDHC-card, but 2000 file limit is the recent option of the radio. There is no defect on the radio and therefore cannot be fixed under the warranty or compensate by another way.

I am sorry I cannot provide you with kindliness information.

***UPDATE***

So, over the weekend i converted all my music from AAC format to mp3 and then moved all music into album folders so there is only one line of folders for the unit to read.

The 32gb Class 10 card arrived on Monday so all the music was promptly put onto the card and then the card transferred to an old PC for the 'hidden' mac files to be removed.

I then visited the Skoda dealer yesterday to use the new card in the Bolero of the 59 plate vRS they confirmed this was a Bosch unit.

Well it took 15 minutes for the music to start and it started with the first track from the first listed album. I then wanted to see if the complete 32gb was being read, so pressed 'selection' and then the folder button at the top left and then it said "Please Wait". After about 1 minute the music 'clipped' and was not acceptable. After 5 minutes of trying to see the folders I gave up stating that it was not practicable.

So discussions with the sales guy ensued and we have agreed a 'repayment' for the SD cards and a split on the cost of retrospectively fitting the VAG MDi system.

I genuinely do not think it is possible any longer to read the whole 32gb's of the card. I believe VAG or Delphi have limited the reading of the card to 2,000 ish tracks so the unit has enough memory to read quickly enough to make the unit useable. The issue is that Skoda have is that they are not making anyone aware of this issue so people are not ordering the MDI unit as they think the SD card will substitute. Problem is it won't and they will have lots of unhappy customers.

I think this is where i bow out as i am happy with the resolution I have which is to have the choice of my music when i want it. I am sorry i have not been able to find a resolution that will satisfy everyone, but i guess the answer is that it is a discussion with your dealer to find your solution.

  • Author

Dkgt before you 'bow out' can you give an idea of the cost of having an MDI unit retrofitted by the dealer Full price please, not including the discount which you negotiated.

Incidentally I think your dealer has been very responsible in his resolution of the problem.

I purchased my Yeti through an Internet broker so the original dealer is too far away to allow me to take this up with him and I don't think it reasonable to approach my local Skoda agent who has not had the benefit of the original sale.

Malc

Hi Malhall01

I agree the dealer is being reasonable however as i bought the car from them and asked for 3 options, 1) iPod connection, 2) Metallic Paint and 3) heated seats. I asked for them to be thrown in. I was told i could have the paint and pay for the seats and was told i did not need the ipod connection as there was a 3.5mm jack and a 32gb capacity SD card slot and if I had less than 32gb there was no need to spend the money on the connector. So the dealer does have some responsibility. So I don't want to give a cost of what i am paying because as you say i feel the dealer is being reasonable.

As for the cost the dealer spoke of cost rather than sale price and they didn't talk about labour, so i cannot tell you the cost. I also know that dealers standard response is that it cannot be done, so you might stumble there, however I do know there are independent guys that do it like these.

Hope this helps, good luck

Thanks DK - that is very fair. I will check round for someone who is willing to supply and fit (if the price is right!).

Cheers

Malc

Thanks all for the updates.

Given the options - a HU that takes an age to read the files and then can't cope, or one that can read 2000 files, I know which one I would go with every time!

Anyway, 2000 3 minute long songs is a lot of hours of driving!

FINAL UPDATE

So car went in yesterday at 9 am, had a call at 13:21 to say all done and working and would i like to collect.

It's exactly as i expected the SD card to be. Excellent.

However, Skoda and the dealers need to be careful how they market the SD card as it seems to disappoint those who really want to use it.

hi all,

any update on this thread?

I have exactly the same problem described above. Ie, a 16gb card half full of music and the Bolero will not read all of it.

700 x MP3s and 300 x WMAs - and it will not read all of these files! Extremely frustrating.

Has anyone tried a Firmware upgrade?

Thanks in advance

Don't think the Bolero will read WMA files hence it will only read just over half your card!

Hi, just picked up my Octy vRS Limited Edition yesturday, trying to work out the Bolero system and have a few questions about SD card...

Can i use a Camera SD card and transfer songs onto it...?

How do i transfer songs, my PC has no card slot...can i do it through the camera?

Do I have to buy a SD to PC adapter and if so which one/type

Can I transfer files from Itunes onto card or will they block me cos its not an ipod

I dont need anymore space than 2gb really so would only need basic SD card

Thanks in advance

Hello folks,

Quick question, a a new superb2 owner, I want to use the SD card slot, so wanted to know, can I just put a load of songs from my iTunes onto the card? Sorry to be a dunce, but not sure what format they are on iTunes....!!

Thanks in advance!

M

Actually, scrap that, I just found out that they are a mix of MP3 and MPEG4Audio, so hopefully they will work. Just copied a load of tracks onto a card, and see what happens....

  • 5 weeks later...

I have had my brand new octavia SE Connect estate for a week now and just recently loaded all my music onto a Transcend 32GB SDHC card (class 10). I have experienced the same as most people in that not all of my music is shown in the list. My music is divided into folders by artist and subfolders for each album. I am only able to read artists beginning with "A" up to the letter 'O'. This is a total of 3347 music files in 573 folders (13.9GB in total size). I thought in my wizdom maybe dividing my collection into two subfolders for artists beginning "A-O" and "P-Z" might fix this. Unfortunately it would only show the folder "A-O". I have MDI but I thought I would buy an SD card instead as it was cheaper than buying the cable from Skoda. My SD card only cost £15 from Amazon. I may just buy an additional card to cover artists from O-Z but its a tad annoying. IF it says it takes 32gb cards then it should cope with the capacity of files it holds. The idea you can only listen to half your music on your card seems utterly ridiculous and should certainly be mentioned in the manual. My mobile phone will happily read 32gb of music from a micro SD card so I dont see why the same cant apply for a car stereo. I might speak to the dealer about the issue soon so will update if i do. I dont hold much hope though.
