Banging noise from rear

Featured Replies

Ive had a problem since i got my vrs, its never felt stable at speed,

Its always felt like its wondering on rear end and any sort of cross wind and it feels really upstable,

I put it down to 10 year old springs and shocks and worn bushs, Ive not fitted coilovers and replace all front lower arm bushs, felt better but its still not right.

Its now developed a heavy banging noise on passenger side rear but it doesnt do it all time and its only over little bumps, Ive had car on ramp at work and its not exhaust and i carnt see any marks anywhere where its catching, Ive had a look at axle bushs or i have the little i can see of them,

Do we thing it could be them knocking and causing it to be unstable

Sounds like the rear axle bushes, try replacing then with fabia Vrs ones. The guide's on Rob's site called pimp my skoda.

Yep sounds defo like rear beam bushes. When they wear out the rear beam can get loose and bang/crash / clunk about over bumps. The noise sounds worse as the noise travels under the car.

Rob, out of interest, what the superpro rear bushes like?

Thought so, another job to do then, Fabia bushs or superpro bushs then

I was going to ask similar question, reading the thread on mkivs but can't see the answer there yet.

Which bushs to get, seams to be down to fabia Vrs, superpro or powerflex.

The cars on 86k now and still on same shocks and springs but all the bushs on the front have been done. So thought the back ones are probably need doing.

Ive heard the powerflex bushs are abit harsh

From what i can understand, The Fabia one will be firmer but still sorta O.E spec comfort. The Polly bushes will give a harsher ride and be more noticable. Or i can be totally wrong

I don't want a harsher hide so I guess its the Fabia Vrs bush's then. Any idea on cost for the pair? I guess you need new bolts etc and they'l few a few quid each too.

Correct, I have the Fabia VRS ones in mine, similar in design to the Seat LCR's.

All ready printed it off!

Thanks its great when people do guides, make life so much easier so Thanks!

I don't find the Superpro ones to be harsh at all :)

AMD Technik were doing a deal last year to supply and fit a Superpro bush kit for £400 inc VAT, this included the front control arm (front and rear) dog mount, rear axle bushes and steering rack mount. Very tempting, if you haven't had any of these replaced yet and didn't fancy several hours of DIY work.

I wonder whether they would match this deal in 2011? :)

The Superpro ones had better to be good! £90 for those against £10 each for the Lemforder OEM ones....

Have you fitted new bushes to yours yet m8?

No, I need to buy a set of axle stands and also waiting for the warmer weather if I'm spending all day laying on the drive! Also need to buy a torque wrench. Can't keep borrowing stuff!

I dont mind spending the money if there going to last and cure car been so unstable on motorway

Ordered mine today. Superpro ones. Not sure it is necessary on my car, but it is 10 years old with 90k, so will report back any improvements in a few weeks after i've done the job. Those guides posted earlier are excellent.

Just would point out that if you have a more recent Whiteline RARB then it is a 17mm socket you will need to remove the drop link bolt.

Not sure whether i really need to replace the lower shock nut? Is it a one time only use nut?

Now done both sides. It took me quite a while, 3hrs first side and 2hrs second. Better mechanics have done it much quicker on this forum, but not a bad job overall so long as you have a free afternoon or morning.

No significant difference for me though, suggesting previous bushes were in good order, but not after i'd drilled several holes in them :giggle:

If you use RobClubley's guide then you probably will not need to saw one of the bush bolts off, both of mine extracted from the outer side of the axle bush housing and were also in good condition so i could have re-used them, but better to have at least one spare in case they are not, as they had to be ordered by my Skoda dealer.

I reused mine too, no need to cut them off on my TDI. I wondered if Robs had some accident damage, of if it was assembled the wrong way around and then the fuel tank was put in....

I think it was assembled wrong. Definitely not accident damage as I've owned the car from new :)

I did think you had owned it from new, so would know if it has been bent. Guess one of the retards which sticks on numberplates at an odd angle had a go at assembling the rear suspension of your car. :giggle:
