Sounds like an after market mirror, so no idea sorry.

I think the ring should be in the rear of the mirror itself so the arm that attaches to the windscreen fits tight in the mirrors rear.

I've since replaced the whole unit with a 2nd-hand one from a E-bay breaker. It's grey, howver suits the interior. (seats).
