Alternator

Featured Replies

Just had the battery light come on and a warning message saying "Alternator Workshop"

Is this a common fault @40,ooo miles? Skoda 2.5 v6

Any Idea of cost to repair?

Check the freewheeling alternator pulley before you condemn the machine.

Thanks I will look 2morrow

I have a similar problem and it seems that the freewheeling pulley is slipping so that the alternator itself is speeding up and then slowing down all the time.

Are you able to get new pulleys for these alternators or is it a complete new unit? Is there any way of adjusting the pulley to "tighten" the clutch on it?

Thanks and best wishes

Try this first before spending anything, fully charge the battery, and then ignore the warning for 30 start's, sometimes you can just run the battery low and it will stick the warning on, it probably will be the clutch in the end but when I did mine I found the message didn't clear straight away, hth.

unfortunately the alternator does give grief there is two types used on the suberb one is bosch the other i forget possibly valeo one is not too bad I think its the bosch but the other does give a lot of grief particularly if you jump start other cars you can blow it very easy as for the pulley if it is gone it tends to squeal like a cat with its tail caught ( you can purchase this part separately)but I suspect its not your problem just remove the alternator and take it to your friendly repair shop or replace it with a second hand one from a vw passat there is a little issue with removing the alternator though the bottom bolt is tricky to remove somebody thought that it would be funny if the made the bolt longer then the space to remove it (those silly germans)

Thats correct, Bosch or Valeo, the difference is the earth wire, I had a Bosch iirc, got a recon and it lasted a day, took it back and they only had a Valeo, so i thought hang that I need to get back on the road like yesterday, body fitted fine, belt as well, just the earth wire was in a different place on the back, still reached ok though, I'd recommend getting the correct one, but if push comes to shove both will fit ok.

I got quite expert at changing them, I could do one in 20 minutes in the end as long as the spanner didn't drop into the fan housing, one thing I did notice with the old unit is the bearings were very loose on it after 85k, the recon felt nice and tight, GSF do em for £130 - £180 exchange if anyone needs one, I think it's the Bosch one that is the expensive one suprise suprise.
