ideas on faded paint?

Featured Replies

Right i removed my bump door strips yesterday i am very happy with them removed i like the look of it but i have a slight problem. The paintwork under where the strips were is a slightly different colour is slightly brighter. Its not that noticeable but i can see it and it annoys me lol, any ideas what polish etc would be good to try and get the paint to match in better?

I dont want to put them back on i really prefer them removed. Plus the ones that were on the car are all bent and wrecked so i would have to buy a new ones :-(, so any ideas on products i can buy to try and match it in better? I have tryed autoglym paint renevator it made it slightly better but still not perfect :-(

What colour is it?

I took octy badges off mine and had same problem, i tried all sorts but ended up getting valeter at work to go over it with compound and buffer, can still see it abit but its not as bad

Its corrida red, i really dnt want to put new bump strips back on looks so much better without,

I can get a hold of a buffer what products would be best to use? I am not to fussed if it aint perfect but wld just like it slightly better

Hang on. Your car is clear coated and you are trying to alter the colour of the red below the lacquer - it wont work.

isn't it down to oxidation and pollution on the clear coat that makes it appear a different colour? Just a guess so might be wrong lol.

Thats possible too, my guess is a combination of both

No you can do it with g6 and a white foam disc for power buffer use lots of soap and water and it will come out did mine and no probs,

Did you have the same problem mate when you done it? Does the g6 compound match it in pretty good?

I have never used a machine polisher before i take it is justy a case of keeping the pad soaking wet with soapy water?

Yes and yes and put soapy water on the car too. make sure you keep it moving all the time. and don't press hard.Ideally you want a polisher that has variable speed and keep it around number 2 to 3 at most.

Cheers mate ill get some g6 compound ordered.so basically the more water the better?

Whats the best form of g6 compound to use mate what stuff did you use?

They seem to vairy in price on ebay from 10 quid to over 35quid

Cheers

You can use G3 without a polisher but will take you longer, and as Mountie states keep the paint wet to stop the abrasive compound digging in to much.

This will bring the lacquer up and clear which will reflect the brighter colour underneath which should be as the paint under the bump strip.

Ok just a wee bit of an update

I am awiting my g6 compound that i ordered a few days ago to try and get rid of these annoying marks. Anyway since i got the polisher yesterday and me being inpatient i thought i would have a go with the polisher and some t cut. I followed the tips use have gave me keeping the pannels wet etc. It still looks the exact same though  now i know t cut maybe isn't as strong as this g6 compound stuff but i thought it maybe would of made a slight difference? am i fighting a looseing battle or will the g6 compound work better than t cut?

Paul

T Cut is probably harsher to be honest, so looks like the fading is in the paint and not the lacquer. Watch how hard you go at it as you may 'strike through' the lacquer after repeated attempts.

Yeah i wasn't going hard with it at all,

So it looks like ill never get the fadeing out as its in the paint and not the laquer? :(

could have been a respray? A lot of places would mask the door strips and then paint.

  • Author

I am pretty sure it hasn't had a respray as i know the bonnet had been resprayed as the trim pannel around the grill is slightly darker and the wings are quite badly stone chipped.

If the g6 compound dosn't work, anyone know how much the bump strips are from a dealers?

  • Author

Thought i would phone my local dealers today to see how much bump strips would cost incase i want to put them back on my car.

The parts man told me i would need to pay 82 pound for the four!! Surely that has to be a mistake lol or they are gold plated.
