Car delayed due to turbo fault

Featured Replies

Hi All

I'm after some advice.

I have purchased a 2006 Petrol VRS Estate from my local, well respected franchise. It has FSSH and only 35k miles.

They told me last week it was losing boost pressure, so I couldnt collect until this weekend.

Today I get a message saying the turbo needs to be removed, sent away for repair, and then reinstated taking another week.

Can a turbo be repaired just like that? I would have though a new / reconditioned one would be quicker and easier?

I have paid a £500 deposit for the car which they have said I will lose if I pull out of the sale.

Thanks in anticipation for your thoughts.

Is this a Skoda dealer? If it is I would be amazed if they actually repaired it rather than just replacing it.

Yes turbos can be repaired, depends on what is rwong with it.

Yes - I did question why a new / refurb one is not beinf sought, apparently there are none available.

Will have to wait and see I suppose - just got to wait another week now!

TPS supply service-exchange ones for ~£750 plus VAT. I know (some) dealers order directly through Skoda, but I'd have thought it would be the same? When the one on my parents Octavia went, the local dealer had a 2-day wait for it to come ...

I recently just had my turbo go, so my memory is still quite fresh on this.

Skoda only offered me two options, a brand new turbo which was mega expensive or a re-con one. Sending it for repair wasn't offered as an option. In the end I went for a re-con unit from Turbo Technics.

I agree that turbo's can be fixed, they will find the problem and will replace the seals or vanes or whatever is broken. Turbo technics offered this option but I was worried if they would just fix the problem and then at a later date something else might go wrong with the Turbo.

For me the price and delay didn't stack up to fix my turbo. A recon unit from Turbo Technics was £510 inc VAT and this was couried next day delivery and to fix it would have taken a week and cost £294 in VAT. So really I paid an extra £216 for piece of mind and a 2 year warrany (a repaired turbo carried a 1 year warranty).

My opinion is that your turbo is being fixed as it's the cheaper option for them. I know you'll not really want to hear it but if I was in your position I'd have liked a re-con turbo

They're probably doing it this way as it's a vehicle that's out of manufacturer warranty, so they're carrying the cost directly to get it sorted. Hence them looking at this route.

I guess when you think about it, they can pretty much write off the 3-4 hours labour but the turbo cost is hitting the mark-up on the car........so the couple of hundered quid difference between fixing and a re-con is hard cash to them!

Cheers guys. Either way they have said it will all still be covered unde th warranty. Fingers crossed!

1 year warranty?

Ask them what discount you are getting for the delay, and what car are they going to loan you for a week?? Tell them you have already swapped your insurance over so can't drive your current car without paying an admin fee to swap the insurance back.

Thanks

Am getting a loan car from them later today.

Yes the warranty is a fully inclusive 1 year.

So frustrasting but better to have one in tip top (hopefully!) condition i suppose!

Definitely. In the scheme of things, best to have this sorted before you begin ownership! emoticon-0148-yes.gif

And at least there'll be a fresh unit in there, which is always good for peace of mind.

Turbo faults on the TSFi don't seem to be that common though, which has to be a good thing

As they are insisting you will loose your deposit if you walk away I would insist that they fit a brand new turbo.

Run around in the loan car until they are back in stock.

cheers lads. well i've got a new fabia diesel frmo them for the next week or so - it's fantastic!

I've asked for a new / recon turbo, and have details of the company who will be sorting it, interestingly, not their garage but a turbo sepcialist.
