Towbar advice.

Featured Replies

My wife is insisting that we get a caravan! With that in mind I need a removable towbar fitted. I was advised to speak to Western Towing in Exeter, so popped down for a quote today. To supply the towbar (Witter), electrics and fit it, I was quoted just over £500. That seems high to me, but to be honest I have no idea what I should be expecting to pay.

Can anyone advise me what they paid to supply and fit theirs, thanks.

I was looking at a detachable Westfalia a couple of months ago, that was approx' 180 quid (just checked and they seem to have gone right up!!), I planned on fitting it myself with an extra 50-60 quid for double electrics and a local mechanic to install those.

Realistically though to supply and fit I wouldn't expect much more than £350.

HTH, Lee.

This is the Witter you would probably get, so for twin electrics and fitting £320!! :o

Edit: Just found this excellent price with twin electrics and relay bypass, so everything needed.

Cheers, for that. The second one seems good value. How easy are these things to attach? The mechanic I use will be fine to do all the electrics, just not sure if he has fitted towbars.

Have a look here seems simple enough, give it a try, whats the worst that could happen! ;)

That last one has electrics but doesnt include the relay:

What's not included with this kit?

-Bypass relay if required. Please contact us if you are unsure if you need one.

so would need one to connect the lights i think?

Yep my bad, I just saw the word relay, but it was referring to the switch relay for the fridge etc.....

They do have bypass relays in their eBay shop though for only 20 quid.

I had mine fitted by http://www.hedley-towbars.co.uk/ they probably don't cover your area but their website will give you a guide to prices.

Mine was only single electrics total job done at my home took less than 1.5 hours.

Also try http://www.pfjones.co.uk/ they fit nationally.

Out of interest which type of eletrics did you go for? I want the tow bar for fixing a Thule bike rack and for towing a Jet ski trailer.

I have a Thule 2 bike carrier Single electrics is fine for that. It gives you lights / foglight/ stop lights/ indicators/ number plate light . There is no reversing light on the Thule lighting/number board so I don't know if that is wired to the socket or not.

got a westfalia detachable one fitted for towing my caravan. the towbar, electrics and fitting came to over £400.00 but its a job well done and the new westfalia ones fit the skoda superb estate so when i cahnge the car next, i want a superb so the bar will be transferred across.

Just over £500 for a detachable witter sounds about right to me. I was quoted £535 and £526 for the same towbar with twin electrics and vehicle specific wiring for my car.

I had a range of quotes from £220 for a fixed flange towbar with bypass relay electrics to the £535 for the full monty.

If you do for the detachable towbar then a decent mechanic should be able to fit no problem though the bumper will need removing and may need a bit cutting out of it. The tricky bit is the electrics, you can go for a universal kit with the bypass relay but my advice to you would be to go for the full monty vehicle specific wiring kit with coding to match. It costs quite a bit extra but for that you will get the trailer stability control, fog light disablement, trailer bulb failure warnings and reverse parking sensor disablement. The latter I find invaluable as if you have the sensors and the basic bypass relay kit whenever you engage reverse with the caravan attached, all you will hear is the damn sensor bleeper giving you a continuous, annoying tone. I would say do some digging on the internet and if you go for the vehicle specific kit, find a fitting company who have the computer to reset the coding as part of the job as otherwise you will have to go to your friendly Skoda dealership who will make you part with more of your hard earned cash to do the coding.

In the end I went for a westfalia swan neck towbar, which is fine for my AL-KO hitchhead stabiliser, and the vehicle specific wiring with coding for £390 fitted in 1.5 hours at Phil Taylor towbars at Horndean in Hants. Well happy with the result.
