Is this Octavia done to many miles?

Hi Guys, I am looking to buy a Octavia on a 2008 2.0 TDI it has done 73000 and has got a SKODA service history, the miles are motorway miles. I am just a bit confused if this is a lot of miles for a car of its age?Should it be avoided? What do you guys think?

I have owned a Octavia before and they are fab but my last one I bought with very low miles on.

To help put it perspective my 57 plate late 07 has only just hit the 23 k mark, average for the year is around 34-36 mark. Like you say the octavia is a fab car and should keep pushing for a few more years yet.

Just make sure price reflects the milage.

Anyway what balance of warrenty is left? or indeed dicker for an extended warrenty, this should buy sufficient time to spot any possible gremlins.

Surely no warranty left - warranty is 3 years/60k miles, no?

If it's just over 3yrs old then that's around 24k per year average. Certainly not unusual or unheard of. I've seen company vehicles clock up 30-40k a year before now.

As said, as long as the price is right and condition/quality of the car is acceptable to you, I'd see no reason to not consider it.

73,000 just about run in for a diesel. Don't worry too much about mileage on a diesel. MAKE sure it has SERVICE HISTORY. you should be okay.:rofl:

A well serviced/looked after 2007 Octavia with 70K has every chance to be in better mechanical order than the same car with 30K on.

Cars don't like to be stood, repeated cold starts, short journeys, stop/start traffic etc.

As mentioned above, as long as the higher than average mileage is reflected in the price you should be fine :thumbup:

The things likely to be showing wear at that mileage are

  • Brake discs - probably about due for changing the fronts if all motorway miles
  • Clutch - should still have 25K+ in it if all motorway BUT if the biting point is close to the floor or there are any strange vibrations through the pedal it is a £1K job for clutch and flywheel at a dealer
  • Turbo - check it isn't smokey or whistling or that any overboost errors have been logged by the ECU. Get someone with VCDS to go with you and scan the car to see if anything unusual has been logged. An overboost indicates sticking vanes on the turbo and will put the car in to limp home mode until you stop and start the engine again. It won't turn on the EML though as it is seen as a transient error. If there are overboosts logged it WILL need a new turbo in the not too distant future.
  • Suspension bushes and shock absorbers - does it drive 'tight' still or does it feel a bit loose??

Mine had 115K on a 55 plate last September when I bought it - it has since been remapped and still drives like new BUT it has had a new clutch/flywheel, turbo and A/C compressor under warranty as they all packed in within the first month!

Has the servicing been done at 10K intervals or as variable (approx 18K intervals)?

Remember, if it is from a dealer they have to give you a 3mth warranty by law as an absolute minimum. Seeing as it is below 100K I would be pushing for a decent 1yr warranty as a minimum on this car, and make sure it covers clutch, flywheel and turbo as some will exclude them!

Thats nothing to worry about.

im on my 4th Octavia now and they love high miles and take it in their stride.

Ive had 3 TDis which I had as company cars and i ran them for 18months each and put 80k on each of them.

Im running a 1.8TSi now which ive had for 6 months and put 26k on already.

The TDis never missed a beat and the only problem I had was with 1 of them and the Turbo hose blew off.

But I put that down to the Dealers who had just done a cam belt and cant have refitted it correctly.

My TSi has had the drivers seat base replaced as it colapsed.

Go for it if its cheap enough.

I don't think the mileage is a big issue, but I'd make sure its had the cam belt done.

Also, what's the overall condition like? If it looks honest and straight and the price is right, it should give you a good few years of reliable service.

At the right price and a decent warranty of at least 6 months and preferably 12 in case you find any problems go for it.

73000 motorway miles is far better than short journeys.

I recall an Astra offered to me a few years ago that was 3 years old with 8000miles and was out on Motability with replacement due. That car may well have hardly ever reached operating temperature since an average of 7 miles a day so main journeys probably home to school and back twice a day plus trips to shops and local amenities.

I made interested noises but of course never followed it up.

Instead I bought a 5 year old A4 Avant 1.9TDi PD with 72500 miles on the clock. I got it at a good price because the owner could not keep up the repayments plus cambelt had been done at 67000 miles and he had bought a 3 year warranty.

Five and a half years later I have just sold the car with 115000 miles on the clock. The oil never got more than half-way down the stick between services and it never let me down once. The only work needed beyond routine servicing by my normal local reputable £35/hr labour independent was replacement of both CV joint boots, which are considered routine heading towards 100000 miles, and a MAF sensor which the local ex-Seat dealer fitted for about £80 inclusive.

I never needed to go near an Audi Stealer once.
