lights come on when indicating

Featured Replies

My misses has just rung me on her way to work and said that when she indicates left the left hand head light and rear light comes on and this is when the lights are switched off.

Anyone know why this is happening

Are you sure it is the headlights coming on and not the sidelights?

The stalk also controls the parking lights and my guess these are coming on when they shouldn't.

I'm not sure as she has the car,

I didn't know it done the parking lights aswell.

Maybe a dodgy stalk?

Sounds like a bad earth feedback from either the front or rear indicator unit.

The parking light function should only work when the ignition is off (key out position).

A faulty ignition switch is a common cause of this problem.

It could be a short in the stalk or wiring, but these are less common in my experience.

The best way to check this is to remove the yellow wire from terminal 4 of the ignition switch connection. The output of terminal 4 should only have power when the ignition switch is off (key out position). If it has power at any time, then it is the ignition switch. You can't test with everything connected.

I will take the stalk off later and have a look.hopefully its a easy fix as im no good with electrics

To get the stalk off, you need to remove the airbag and steering wheel, so best to confirm the problem first.

First thing is to make sure you are reporting the correct symptoms.

Are the lights switched off when this happens?

Is it the sidelights?

Do they flash full on with the indicator (not dim or alternate)?

I will have a look this afternoon and post back what I find

Also check if it's both ends or just one. If it's both ends, I'd suspect something tied up with the parking light function, but if it's just the one, suspect a bad earthing point at that corner.

Before taking the switch off try spraying some electrical contact cleaner on the contacts. Might save you messing about taking the steering wheel off etc

Don't worry guys I've found the problem.

The misses was the problem.

We haven't owned the car long and she has just found the parking lights.

When she said to me that she put the indicators on she ment she pushed the stalk down to indicate left and when she got out the car with the keys out the ignition she realised the lefthand parking light and rear light was on due to the stalk not self righting

sorry for the wasted thread

:giggle: Why do i sometimes think that women and cars are a bad combination?? :giggle:
