How to refurbish rusty brake callipers

Featured Replies

Just bought a bargain set of 312mm callipers from a fellow briskoda member :)

They're rather cruddy with dirt & I assume rust. Has anyone refurbished a set of callipers? Any tips to

make the job easy?

Was thinking of getting some kind of rust remover from halfords & giving them a soak, then getting a wire brush attachment for a power drill & wearing it all off before I paint them.

Any tips? :)

A dremel tool will make your life easier. But it's just lots of cleaning really. Then paint with hammerite.

Yeah we've got one of those so hopefully it won't take long :) I thought some kind of rust remover might help to shift some of it away, at least I think it's rust, it's like a thick grey casing.

my brand new TT calipers were grey as standard so that may be the bare original metal you can see

Luckily as they were new I was able to just slap a coat of hammerite on them and away they went.

scrubbedy scrub scrub back to a good finish and start from there.

I've got 99% of a tin of much sought after smooth green hammerite if you were ever this far north :D

As far north as? :) just having a look at my callipers now, they are Audi ones so perhaps they are supposed to be grey, but either way they have some flakey cruddy stuff on them which is rough so I'll have to get it smooth before putting paint on. I'll try put a pic up later, but I'm having problems tryna work out how to get a pic from iPhone to photobucket to here ;)

As far north as?

Gloucester :)

yeah probabaly are grey as standard then; I don't think Audi pushed the boat out and painted them on TT's.

probably just need a damn good clean, a firm wire brushing, another clean, then a coat of something fancier

at least I think it's rust, it's like a thick grey casing.

I've never seen grey rust! I've only ever seen orangey coloured rust...

Lol! I need to show you guys a picture I think.. It's difficult to tell if it's rust covered by a thick coating of salt & grime off the road, or just general crap. I'll get a pic on.

I think I could manage the 20 minute trip to glowster 

here we go.. what does this look like..

brakecalliper.jpg

looks exactly like my brand new ones just a bit more corroded and covering in road muck.

A wire brush is your friend :thumbup:

Yeah road muck sounds about right, I will give them a going over with the wire brush & power tool, in no rush so will see how I get on :) won't be a bad investment for £120 with discs & pads :)

Drill and wire brush attachments will work a treat. Mask up the seals to prevent them from being damaged. A few coats of spray hammerite and you're away.

Anyone here tried Electrolytic bath.

My mate does it for a lot of car parts & the results are awesome.

You need Baking Soda, a car battery & an old brake disk & a washing up bowl.

I will see if i can find his link showing results.

Not my mates link, but gives you the impression of what can be done:

Can you get high heat paint that works in a spray gun? What about lacquer? I have some Brembo's with corrosion to the lacquer and am going to paint them but have been told some high heat paints will melt.

Could do with some of that for mine :smirk:

Gone a bit different, Black Carriers, green calipers :giggle:

get em bead blasted and spray em..

Thought i'd update this thread as my dad got some wire brush bits today to connect to a hand drill so i had a quick go on one of the calipers to remove some of the crud ready for painting..

this is what it looked like before;

this is the wire brush attachments i used;

this is a close up of what i've managed to get it to;

it took about 45minutes out in the garden. if you're going to do this you need to wear a mask as it kicks up loads of black dust. might try and find a smaller wire brush attachment to get into the little nooks and crannies a bit more before i slapping some paint on them. one down, one more to go :)
