strange tyre wear

Featured Replies

hi,

just had to put my spare wheel on.

does anyone know what could cause this sort of wear?

its worn on the inside edge but only half of the way round.

the other front tyre was fine.

only thing i can think of is the wheel or hub is buckled but i cant tell.

Does the car make any noises/vibrations at speed, you would definatly feel something like that through the steering. Unless the tyre is uber faulty, but i can't see it not making it a real horrible experience to drive.

i have noticed the road noize increasing recently, maybe a tiny buzz in the sterring wheel. ill need to go for a drive now to see if its stopped after changing wheel. hope its the wheel and not the car...

strange maybe a mis-shapen tire?

Buckled. Get it balanced and I bet It's way out.

sound has changed since i put the spare on...

maybe it has worn something being buckled.

there is a pretty big weight on the old wheel (pic 3 top) might not have helped.

i took all 4 wheels off the ground and spun them.

anyone know if the front brake pads are supposed to be touching the disk? it spins but only half way round.

can a wheel bearing be worn but not loose? one of the back wheels spins for ages the other doesn't at all.

sorry for all the questions!...

I'd say buckled wheel or deformed (egg shaped) tyre probably, but that tyres down to its wear markers across the rest of it anyway, so it's only fit for the bucket. Get a tyre place to put it on their balancing machine and they'll be able to tell you if the wheel looks buckled or not.

Ok thanks. looks like i'm off to National tomorrow!

Hang a wowe a minute.

You said that it only spins half way then stops.

Brake pads don't touch the disc but the gap is absolute zilch.

Sounds like you got a warped disc, therefore every time the wheel spins and hits the warped bit on the disc it slows the wheel down every spin causing more friction with the road.

Not bad enough to notice any thing when driving but is happening.

It's like tapping the brake every exact turn of the wheel until you get an uneven wear.

Exactly the same wear pattern i have been seeing on my front tyres. balancing, wheel alignment (*2) and new bushes didnt sort it.

fortunately i have just had new discs and pads so hopefully that will be the end of it.

Uneven tyre wear usually down to following; incorrect camber or caster, malfunctioning suspension parts, unbalanced wheels, incorrect toe settings. You also talk about the wheels not spining freely, with only one of the rears doing so? Right,... this can be (worst case is warped discs)but also the following; rust lip to disc, contaminated pads, "sliders" sticking, piston to caliper body seal gone hard, not allowing piston to retract back after brake pedal released, on the rear brakes...also incorrect adjustment of handbrake, or sticking of cable!! Then really bad case is worn bearings, but usually you will hear a high pitch faint (at first) squeal!!

I'd guess he's probably toeing out.

Or, bit of a long shot, is it the o/s drivers side? and do you have lots of roundabouts on the way to work?

console bushes.

I have the same wear on my front passenger side and rear drivers side. The rear started doing that last year and wheel alignment was checked by the dealer. Whats the approx cost of fitting upgraded console bushes?
