DMF to SMF conv - yes or no guys

Featured Replies

My clutch is gone :( Car is in the garage atm awaiting a new kit. Very quick question for the gurus (no doubt follwed by a lengthy debate!). Should i convert the DMF to SMF at the same time. This is an 06 1.9 TDI taxi if that has any bearing on the matter.

Yes and its 75% cheaper for the single system, I had mine done and its nearly done 100,000 taxi miles on the single system now at 156,000

Mike had his converted and he could not be happier

Interesting, cheers skippy. I called the guys at awesome-gti earlier and they told me they could get the conversion for circa 900 squid

which seemed v pricy, but lots of customers revert due to the excessive chatter and he would not advise it personally.

Tbh i just need to get back mobile and earning asap but considering killing two birds with one stone.

smf's are harsher on the gearbox.

do it, you can get the complete kit from Skoda themselves for less than £900!

I'm still watching (and waiting for my DMF to go). The thing that worries me is that the local, generally well thought of, main dealer told me that they had fitted SMF's to a couple of taxis and both had returned to have DMF's re-fitted. This was at a time when we had just got the 06 car and both they and I thought the judder was the DMF. It turned out not to be.

I do a lot of small mileage creeping along with oldish ladies aboard. I often have the bang and the engine stops dead phenomenon, so get marooned dangerously on awkward turns etc. I'm sure this is the DMF getting out of sync with the engine pulses. I read today in the Telegraph that with a DMF you should rev up before letting in the clutch, yet I've previously read that the DMF is there to absorb the pulses at low revs. Revving up seems a recipe for clutch wear.

I haven't yet ever read a post from someone who had reverted to DMF from SMF.

Wohoo back on the road. And just to make me look like a complete numpty it transpires i already have the smf conversion courtesy of previous owner - bonus. Feels like a new car with the clutch swapped out too, now just to pay for it :'(

I'm expecting Awesome mis-understood your requirement and were quoting you for a performance SMF setup.

Wardy- yes i agree they where quoting you £900 for a Helix Clutch + SMF

you just want a Valeo SMF

valeo all the way lads! had my 1.9 pd done at 91000 miles now at 94000 miles and no problems at all! so much better and quieter and much more torque to play with! :)

On striping down everything to fit a new clutch, mechanic found that the clutch pivot lever was bent and said that it could have been the main reason the gear change was notchy, also clutch plate springs well warn and release bearing had nearly worn through the plate.

Got the car back today a day late due to the wrong clutch being sent down due to dealer saying it was a Saks fitted, when it was a LUK one

anyway everything is back to normal now and peddle is extremely light to use

clutch kit £189

release bearing £29.51

clutch pivot lever £7.86

ball pin £3.51

Labour £100

vat 66 .11

total £396.68

Not to bad considering my car tied up his lift for over a day

I'm on my second clutch only due to the above happening when the master cylinder went duff.
