hissing

Featured Replies

ive just been out to my car to top the oil up.

ive run the engine for a minute and reved it to get the oil moving about,

when ive finished running the engine(including revving) ive walked to the front of the car and i can hear a hissing noise.

im not sure where its coming from as yet as ive just had a homemade curry cooked for me(more important lol)

the area of where the hissing is coming from is the top right corner of the engine.around the airfilter hose/n75,dv etc corner.

im going to pop back out shortly and remove the engine cover so i can get my head in and see.

when i was reving the car i was reving up to around 3000rpm.

the hissing slowly fades out, its almost like pressure is building up and slowly releasing.

could this be a knackered dump valve?

Or maybe something to do with the vacuum pump and a split hose....

Would the engine noise maybe not mask the hissing noise at 3000rpm (I am not familiar with the 1.8t, just a rattly old 1.9tdi!)

im not sure,im going to get my misses to rev the car while im in the engine bay.

the hissing happens even when you turn the car off, this is how i noticed it.

just been out to the car and found the problem,

it seems to be the hose that runs from the top of the intake manifold around the back of the engine bay along the bulk head and into the abs unit.

this is the hose,

i was aware it was split a when i got the car but wasnt sure if it was a pressurised hose or not so just wrapped some electrical tape around it,

anyone know what this hose is?

does this hose have a non return valve on it or not?

or is it just a piece of hose

That is split where mine is failed. I fixed mine initially with some insulation tape and a jubilee clip, and then did it more properly with some heat-shrink. Mine has a non-return valve closer to the vacuum pump I believe.

I've been in touch with someone who is breaking a 53 reg octy on eBay and they have said they will send me a price for posting the hose to me,it's a awkward hose as it's not flexible,

how much is a 2nd hand hose worth if it's not split?

If this doesn't happen I'm sure I can join a piece of hose before the non return valve to replace the split section.

Mine is split on the next join after the one in the picture aswell

Please do not fix with any old bit of pipe, or bodge a repair, this is what you are relying on to make your brake function. Wouldn't think it would be expensive from a dealer or TPS.

went to my local skoda garage and ordered the new hose to replace the whole lot.

there was a bit of confusion at the garage as the part number was different, this is due to the product recall in 1999 since then they have changed it to the replacement part.its only the last 2 letters being from BS to ES.

this now comes as a 1 piece hose and not 3 pieces.

all for £25,will have it friday and hopefully fit it saturday.

has anyone fitted one before?is it just a matter of unplugg the old and plug in the new one?

When you get this can you please post a pic of it? My brake servo tube has been modified but the tube that is now in use isn't as sturdy as the old one, I'd quite like to see what the new 1 piece one looks like

At the manifold end the semi-rigid pipe will have a brass insert in the end to stop it collapsing when you push it into the rubber hose and put a clamp around it. Not pulled it off at the servo, but I'd imagine it just pushes over a spigot.

If they'd changed it in 1999, then all vRS's should have the revised pipe. Mine certainly isn't a one piece pipe. It's like yours, with 2 one-way valves and a join where the second valve is behind the intake hose.

i was thinking that if it was changed pre to mine being made it would have the revised hose but im unsure fully about it.

i may well try and fit it myself,it cant be that hard of a job really just a pain running the hose as its now 1 piece now 3.may need to remove quite a bit to get access to where i need

When I looked at replacing mine it seemed to run behind a heat shield and then vanished out of sight.... Plus when I visited a parts place they were unsure of what part(s) I would need. Granted, I was sans chassis number.

As I have to see a dealer tomorrow I might ask them....

well again it turned out to be more then the skoda garage expected.

the gentleman at the garage said it seems like they have changed to a 1 piece hose.

i was a bit unsure as that would make it a absolute nightmare to fit.

turn up at the garage to collect my £24.10p hose(not including vat)

i ended up having to spend £48 all together.

the parts diagram they go by isnt clear at all,and the bloke guessed that it LOOKED like it was 1 piece, the hose he ordered turned up and he realised it was the correct one but not long enough to be right.

luck enough they had the other hose that comes out the servo in stock

its a very easy job to replace,

gently prize out the hose from the gromit an the servo housing.

un clip from all the hose clips on the heatsheild and bulk head and take off the hose connector the intake end,

i was done within 10-15 minutes and all is good.

found my hose was split in 3 places each on the joins.

There was a warranty recall on these pipes I believe.... I popped into the dealer to pick up the fabia vRS rear bushes for my Octy and asked the bloke on the parts counter and he told me that my car was too old and they could not look anything up :'(

Maybe I order order up some new hoses too.

yes there was a product recall on these hoses but that was from 1998-1999.

i have posted the part numbers of the hoses on the useful part numbers sticky thread on the octy 1 forum.

the part numbers are for my octy 1 vrs petrol
