SELF LEVELLING REAR SUSPENSION

Featured Replies

I have a Combi CR170 4x4 Elegance on order. (4 weeks now but no build date!). I will be towing a caravan and I am wondering if it is possible to fit self levelling rear shockers. Has anyone out there in Skoda and caravan land investigated if this is possible?

Any details will be appreciated.

Hi Chris,

I would imagine that if your car has still not been allocated a build week, the probability of having the factory fit self levelling suspension should be your preferred option??? I'm not sure why it wouldn't be. It would be covered by the Skoda warranty & you would not be modifing the vehicle.

Is that not worth trying first?

I would expect it to already have self levelling suspension esp as xenons on the elegance require this.

I suggest this is not possible as a Skoda factory fit, nor possibly even as an aftermarket fit. I also suggest you don't need it. I tow with CR170 DSG hatchback ad caravan is 7.8m Bailey Limousin (one of their largest) and it has only a slight effect on the cars horizontal alignment. We set van with hitch weight at around 80kg, and though the car is usually only two people, there is always a big load in the boot and rear seat area when towing. Never had a problem with this configuration.

Chris,

Sorry, I should have looked first.... I guess the reason is its not an option! Odd I could have sworn it was when I was looking last year but in the brochure I kept it wasn't even an option then... even stranger because I was thinking about ordering it but decided not worth it in the end for our requirements.

So sorry I can't help you... maybe someone else can....

Shrinking away into my hole...

The headlights are self levelling, but the suspension is normal. Is self levelling suspension an option on the superb

Xenons require self levelling headlights not suspension

I would be surprised if you will need self levelling suspension the tow ball weight isnt that high its less than one passenger iirc or one mother-in-law at least

I think that car levels xenon lights, not the car suspension. On my Picasso, there was pneumatic leveling for rear suspension. It worked fully automatic, whenever it detects more than 5 passengers or bigger load. Also there was switch in the boot where you can lower car to load some bulky stuff. I think it was far from "Active" pneumatic suspension that some Citroen had...

I've never seen that as option on Superb. However I have ordered preparation for tow bar, and as I could remember there was just option to inlcude tow bar and tow bar electric, nothing else.

The lights alter depending on vehicle loading, not the supension self leveling.

No. It is not a factory option.

As James Says;

It's not a Factory option... i have a 170 4x4, but have never towed with it (i swop it for my old's Sportage when i tow our 'van, which is cheaper, has a longer warranty and is not mine!) :giggle:

... and to add to the Xenon bit - Xenons must be either self levelling (within the headlight) or have self levelling suspension.

Taken from the department for transport website;

Once fitted to the vehicle it must have headlamp cleaning and self-levelling (which can be for the headlamp or can be in the vehicle suspension - some expensive estate cars have "self-levelling suspension" and that is adequate). Also the dipped beam must stay on with the main beam.

These are the regulations for aftermarket HIDs, but in the case of the Superb, it is within the lamp unit.

Early Lexus's (Lexi??) have Xenons but no headlamp washers and no self levelling so its not a hard and fast rule despite what the DOT says

Same with the V40 volvo's i think....!

I dont know if you can still buy them but, many years ago you could buy shockers that you could adjust with compressed air, either buy connecting an air line or on board compressor, I had them fitted to a Nissan Sunny

Found them http://www.monroeshop.co.uk/files_monroe-ride-leveller

Thanks to all of you that have responded. I did check with dealer about factory fit option and was told that it was not available. Based on 'Caravan_Man's' experience I will try towing without any extra rear-end support.

Conversation with dealer today disappointing. He thinks delivery will be nearer 9 months than 6, I will have to make do with BM5 series tourer this summer for caravan tugging.

I think the Passat CC has Active air suspension. When set in sportsmode it lowers and set in Dynamic mode (i thinks it's called) it gets higher.

It's one of the few things that skoda could not loan from pappa volkswagens toolbox :giggle:

I can live with that as Skoda Superb's standard suspension is great and better than most. :)
