Unidentified rattle

Featured Replies

Can anyone help me identify the source of a rattle coming from the engine of my 2010 2litre diesel dsg superb? The 'fluttering rattle' sound seems to come from behind the centre of the dash in 5th and 6th gear under acceleration. It stops if I lift off the throttle and becomes less loud when the engine is really warm (20+ miles of driving). My local dealer has no idea what it may be but suggests is might be a 'resonance' noise. It is an irritation in what is otherwise a refined and quiet car - any ideas would be gratefully received. Thanks.

Check the engine cover and air filter assembly. I had similar noise with my vehicle removed engine cover and found lot of ground dust at the ball fitting points, the rubber bushes were so loose they were wearing away. Cleaned completely, very light smear of oil on metal balls, eased up rubber bushes in cover grooves and added a little super glue, and refitted at once so that bushes positioned themsevles in correct position. Sound gone, so well worth a try.

Thank you very much. I will give this a try!

Did as you suggested (minus the superglue!) I found lots of dust too - cleaned the bushes and oiled the metal balls. The sound is very much reduced and can hardly be heard, but I remain a little confused as this faint sound is still present if I drive without the engine cover fitted! Will check the air filter assembly next. But the improvement so far is very pleasing - thanks for your help.
