Clicking Sound

Featured Replies

I wonder if someone else has encountered a very loud clicking sound that happens when the car changes direction through a corner. It also happens when I enter a driveway where the left front wheel is the first wheel to hit the drive entrance. It is very loud and sounds like it comes from the left front suspension area but I just cannot see what is causing it and I have even less idea. I am not convinced it is in the suspension as I think somewhere, something is flexing due to body movement.

It sounds to me like it could be the balance of the wheel. I had the same thing on my current car once when I had new tyres put on.

To balance the wheel, little pieces of lead are stuck on the inside of the wheel. Sometimes these can be positioned in such a way that when the wheel is turned, it can rub off something and causes this clicking sound.

If that's all it is, it's no problem, just take the car back to have it done properly.

If it's something else, I'm afraid I can't help...

Thanks for the reply but this is definitely caused by loading the left front or unloading it fairly heavily and quickly. if driven slowly it does not occur but I have never driven slowly and am not about to start. I have tried bouncing the car up and down by hand and can't hear it so I guess it is going to be hard to find.

Is it just a single loud click or does it click continously (like a CV joint)? If it's a single loud click it sound like a a problem I had with a Passat before where the rubber mount on top of the strut had become damaged and the metal inside it had come exposed, you could take a look at that. If it sound more like a clunk try your bushes. But if it's a continous click it probably drive related.

Diesel with DSG, I would still be interested where the sound is from in a petrol though. Thanks.
