VRS cr TDI Engine/driving noises, are they normal?

Featured Replies

My 11 plate diesel VRS has a tinny sort of ticking sound from around 1800rpm upwards (ticking increases with RPM). You can only hear it with the windows down. Can anyone tell me if this is normal?

Also, when accelerating, there's a bit of a whirring (??) sound coming from the passenger side when accelerating. Only notice at a lowish speed (may be masked by road noise at higher speed), anyone else notice this on their cars?

Noisy tappet for the ticking noise anyone? Try and get someone familiar with engine noises to listen. I think that the tappets are all hydraulic as opposed to shim or other adjustment across the range on these VAG engines. If it is a noisy tappet, in my experience with other vehicles, the garage will try and fob you off if it's under warranty with remarks such as:- 'It'll probably go away', or 'See what happens', or 'Some of them do that'.

If it is a noisy hydraulic tappet, an oil change may fix it or you can use a proprietory remedy such as 'Wynns Hydraulic Valve Lifter Treatment', a U.S. product that you tip into the oil, suitable for diesel and petrol egines. Halfrauds sell it. Loads of people with older MX5's - (they seem prone to noisy hydraulic valve lifters) including myself use this product and it works well, but beware of using an additive like this on a car under warranty as you do not want to invalidate the warranty.

I haven't got any thoughts though on the other whirring noise.

Ticking sound could be a stone stuck in the tread of the tyre, whirring sound may be the turbo spooling up.
