Hi everyone,

312mm brake upgrade is being fitted tonight, and I want to flush through the brake fluid with fresh stuff as it hasn't been done in nearly 3 years.

So, I was wondering, should I get DOT 4 or DOT 5.1, and 500ml or 1 litre?

cant remember which i used, but i grabbed a 1 Ltr and flushed the system through completely.

My mechanic was pleased i had done that as he had to change a rear caliper about a week later and saved him a job :thumbup:

If you want good performance use DOT 5.1...but watch out as not all the same...look for the "WET BOILING POINT" this is the boiling point with added moisture (water) eg when it's a year old! Dry boiling point is brand new out the bottle! Yeah get a 1lt, that's what I use to do the whole car.. and even then it's a bit tight to flush properly....don't forget to bleed the cluch as well!! B)

how hard is this to do? what all does it involve? also about bleeding the clutch? how and why? just to renew the fluid?

Also interested. Have all new brakes now, but I don't think the fluid has ever been changed? Maybe once... will have to check SH.

Father reckons modern brake fluid doesn't need to be changed so much for whatever reason? Something about synthetic as opposed to mineral and not soaking up water? I dunno!

Get yourself a Gunson's "easy bleed" kit.. this has a resevoir bottle with a couple of hoses coming out of it.. one connects to included cap to top of brake fulid res' on car the other to the air valve on your spare tyre..just fill bottle with new fluid..pressurize system with air and then bleed each brake caliper in turn..no pedal pumping etc. some people say do the nearest one to the ABS pump first then work futher away..others say start furthest away from ABS pump then work closer..I start closest then work to furthest away! Clutch has a hydraulic operating system to operate...draws fluid from the main brake res'. There is a brake bleed valve on the top of the gearbox..just bleed it last or first as per brakes!!! B)

Andrew - I am just sticking with standard fluid, I do a few track days a year, and I never get any fade/problems with running standard stuff. Don't see the need in spending loads on fancy fluid unless you abuse the brakes personally.

All Dot4 and 5.1 is hydroscopic.. eg it absorbs water from the atmosphere... so needs changing every TWO!!! years without fail... se previous post re WET BOILING POINT B)

I just fitted my 312 mm brakes last week and used dot 4 esp synthetic brake fluid when flushing out system.

Sorry chaps for the late reply, but my laptop went funny on me yesterday :dull: So I went and got a litre of DOT 5.1. All went well fitting the 312's and new rear discs and pads, flushed the system through with the fresh fluid, and everything seems good :)

The feel through the pedal seems way better, even though everything is still bedding in and I'm being gentle :D

312mm upgrade on a non-vRS Fabia...if you can get hold of good hubs quite cheaply, like I did, it's not that hard, well worth doing IMO. 256mm to 312mm is quite a jump! :)

More money!!!!.... I've just put better pads,discs,fluid,hoses on...mind you I don't have the heavier diesel engine up front!!! Next upgrade to take my cash is the Powerflex console bush, and a 70shore Superpro replacement big bush for the gearbox to subframe mount!! B)

Haha in that case, the standard 256mm setup but using uprated bits should be plenty for the lighter 1.4 Fabia :)

First did (upgraded) the brakes 7years ago...just re-done with new (upgrade) parts on the front..the rear (upgraded) will now need replacing in summer..and will also strip the pistons out and replace the seals like I did on the fronts (fronts were done in Jan as piston sticking) And yes this braking system does work very well!! Which is why after 7yrs the upgrade parts are beeing replaced like for like (see signature strip for spec)

Will let you know about subframe to gearbox mounting when I get round to it...maybe a months time as very busy at mo'...should be good for diesel engines as been hearing alot about the excess vibration thro' the steering wheel with the Vibratechnics ones (they even admit as much) and the other 80shore hardness bushes!! (70shore is still way harder than OEM) B)
