Superb Cruise Control

Featured Replies

RR Phantom, Bently (Arnage, Continental and Flying Spur), Maybach, Mercedes (S600 and S500), Audi A8, they've all got cruise control and I can confirm that they're all different from the Columbus. So what? New car, new controls, get used to it - wishing isn't going to change what you've got and a test drive could and should have revealed what you were getting before purchase. Hmmmm - I must stop sitting on the fence! :)

Gavn Tobin, if the increments were 5kph and you'd set it to within three of the limit, what then? I find the single increments useful if I don't hit it spot on first time.

I discovered the poor system on my test drive and probably wont buy!

If we didn't each have a wish list then this forum would be largely empty! Comments & Feedback are the only ways manufacturers will get to find out what we think of their product. Whether they do anything about it is another matter. But just saying thats how it is get used to it wont help.

As I said before a massively well equiped car with every toy I need, so why allow the cruise control be so crude (ships spoiling & tar, springs to mind)

PS did I mention the uncomfortable seats.

I think we definitely need pinned topic/polls what we like and what we don't. It would help prospect buyers to decide. This site helped me a lot to bring decision to by Superb, and later to configure all options. Hopefully some discomfort issues might be resolved in next MY or new model. Something similar exist in German forums and it is very appreciated.

The cruise control is an improvement over those in the previous model and on others in the range. I'd guess that it's among the least important feature for many, compared to, say, SatNav, mobile pairing, storage and passenger space, etc. and the car has to be built to a price. You're the first I've heard to complain about it so vociferously, very few seem to agree and I'd doubt that engineers within VAG are wringing their hands over that issue right now. My "get used to it" comment relates to the overall features/price balance which, IMO, is about right. :S

No display of cruise speed on the dashboard

No incremental change of setting even (5 presses = 5 miles per hour change, for example)

Am I missing something or is it really this crude?

I found it a disappointment too. My previous car was a VW Passat and the cruise control was on a separate stalk, pulling it towards the steering wheel, as in flashing headlights, incremented speed by 1 KPH. Flicking the stalk upwards, aka turn signal indicators, increased setting by 10 KPH, flicking downwards decreased by 10 KPH.

Set speed shown in maxidot, or Passat equivalent. I found it very convenient for speed limits, especially when moving from one zone to another where one flick of the stalk set the new speed, or two flicks if gong from 60 to 80 KPH.

I find the Superb control very crude in comparison but I am learning to live with it.

It is funny how the perceptions of ergonomics vary. As soon as I drove the Superb I found the cruise control very intuitive and easy to use. A few weeks ago I rented a Peugeot and what a nightmare that was to use with multiple buttons and roller switches. The cruise control did indicate the speed; it was set at 20kph. It took almost 200 miles before I worked out how to use it.

I've never had a car which displayed the speed setting for the cruise

Neither have I, and my last 5 cars have had cruise control.

I have a Passat while I wait for my Superb to be built, I like the extra stalk, you can set the speed using the display and turn it on. The stalk lets you speed up or down in both 1mph or 5mph steps.

I use the 5mph function lot on the motorway to fit the flow of traffic.

It's not really a hardship to use the speedo and 1mph steps, but a 10mph adjustment is not as slick when you pull into the fast lane clicking the rocker.

Passat is leagues ahead of the superb when comparing CC.

The superb has one of the crudest CC's I've used. It can't get any more basic.

Still, better than not having it I suppose!

Blimey!! Driving your car by pushing buttons instead of concentrating and activating cruise when at a speed you want, then disengaging it and re-engaging when safe to do so, is probably why cruise control is illegal on certain motorway stretches in Europe - you aren't concentrating, just engaging cruise and then speeding off into the distance (not realising you're in a 30 mph zone).

Of course it could i have driven many cars than dont have a increment feature.

I drove a American car once where you could hit resume from a standing start and it would belt back up full throttle to the speed it had been set , you could use it for great drag starts :)

I had a separate stalk on my E Class and it was easier to use ergonomically but the functionality was exactly the same

Gosh! I never knew cruise control was illegal anywhere - thanks for the warning. I must admit it is not something I would ever have considered when driving in Europe - you see these signs in their native tongue and hope that you can translate them into something meangingful. Any idea of the areas where cruise control is frowned upon?

Hello everybody, I am new to this forum. I am currently driving a Mercedes C280T petrol, waiting for my Superb estate 2.0 TDI 170PD DSG.

4 weeks to go till delivery lol.

I have owned 3 mercs in the last 12 years and I can confirm that there is no cruise control indicated speed anywhere. But there is an indication (and quite a clear one at it) of the speed limiter, displaying the selected speed limit.

And this is something I am going to miss on the superb. I know it has a speed limit warning, but a speed limiter is an anti-police tool (you select a speed, e.g. 50 kmh, and the car will keep this speed as max. regardless of throttle position, unless it is switched off, or during a throttle kick-down.

I believe that the CC function on the Superb is quite nice and siple to use (at least this one time I tried it when I test-drove the car). . .

I've seen these no cruise control signs here in Belgium, but not other countries. It looks like this:

I don't see what the big problem is with how advanced or otherwise the CC is? I mainly use it for the dreaded average-speed cameras. For example I slow down to 50MPH (or whatever it is) switch on the CC and it stays at 50MPH until I cancel it or speed up/slow down. Does exactly what I want and expect it to.

Coming from the Mondeo system I found this better IMHO. For me, I don't need any more info on the display about CC installed speed. It's quite easy to change the speed as well soo... I'm happy! :D

I have just had my first test drive in a Superb Estate and I was very impressed. One annoyance though was the lack of functions on the cruise control:No display of cruise speed on the dashboardNo incremental change of setting even (5 presses = 5 miles per hour change, for example)Am I missing something or is it really this crude?

I'm confused. On the basis that the dials, stalks, MFD and cruise control are identical to the Golf Match 1.6TD DSG I had as a hire car, it does all the things you're mentioned here. It would be annoying if it didn't though as getting the indicated 73mph for a bang-on actual 70mph cruise speed would be a pain without it.

  • 1 year later...

No, it will only work with petrol engined cars.

Buggah. We have VW Caddy 1.6 TDI BMT at work, and they do have the feature. So I just thought it would work in the Superb 1.6 TDI as well, since it´s the same engine, and the display looks the same.
