Windows XP accessibilty control panel applet

Featured Replies

Someone I know wanted to enable the 'ping when caps lock pressed' toggle keys option in Windows XP Professional.

There was, however, no accessibility options icon in the control panel, so I got him to extract the access.cpl file off the original CD i386 directory to the %systemroot% system32 folder, and the icon & applet appeared in the control panel.

Now, although you can get to the options, switching on toggle keys doesn't actually make the 1970s PONG type bleeps out the computer.

I've had a thought that perhaps it plays out of the PC internal speaker rather than the soundcard and maybe there isn't a PC speaker in the computer, but any other pointers most welcome - perhaps there's more files needed?

Ta for an info.

Just tried it on my PC (XP-Pro) an the beep is comming from the internal speaker, it make no difference if the external (sound card connected) speakers are on or off.

Can't help you with the files needed but an easy way to know if the pc has an internal speaker or not is to listen when it boots up. If all is fine you will here one beep (if it has a speaker) if not then the pc has no internal speaker, which would be very strange unless the pc was home built (badly).

when you start stickykeys (press shift 5 times) theres an option for a wee display in the taskbar :)

You may have to add it properly for Windows to recognize it? I've never seen it not listed with an XP install though.

Try going to Add/Remove Progs on Control Panel, then the Windows Components button at the side. Something useful *may* be listed there.

Strange one that though - I use the Caps Lock sound myself, very handy when you've got wireless keyboards with no lights

I've tried enabling sound in the accessibility options but still only get the warning applet. It really would be useful to have an audible indication so that passwords don't get screwed up. :(

This option worked for me - goes "bip" when caps lock goes on, and "boop" when it goes off... XP pro on a laptop - hence no internal speaker as such.

That's the one I enabled, Nick. No sound for me. Perhaps I need to reboot?

Update. Tried rebooting. Still no sound.

It always uses the PC's internal speaker -just tried it on a couple of machines here. Have a look at your sound settings, and make sure you haven't got the internal speaker muted in Windows.
