Blown turbo/knackered intercooler

Featured Replies

So the wife was driving me back to work early last week when she pressed the accelerator the battery light came on and power died completely. AA came out and towed us to the local Skoda dealer (mitchell skoda in Ellesmere Port). AA couldn't tell what the problem was so Mitchell had a look (no mention of a fee for this...). They've diagnosed a dead/broken turbo with knackered intercooler and a repair bill at £1.5k.

Having known not very much about cars, is this what I should be looking at paying or could I get this done a lot cheaper elsewhere? I'm based in Ellesmere Port (near Chester), so any local recommendations would be gratefully received. At the moment the car is stuck at Skoda and i've been told if I want to collect it its a £100 fee for them because they 'diagnosed' it.

grumble grumble.

at dealer prices doesnt seem far away....dont know how intercooler is knackered unless turbo disintergrated and bits went in it....theres many ways around it.....2nd hand turbo n intercooler....recon turbo...and independant to fit parts....many choices.

Any local garage would be able to repair it for cheaper than that, u can get the parts yourself from several places and have the garage fit them. Main dealers all ways charge a fortune, I try and stay away from them if I can.

Plenty if places will do u a reconditioned turbo for reasonable money and u should be able to get hold of a intercooler fairly easy, look in the for sale section, many people will have there standard unit as they upgrade to the fmic unit....

for 1.5k if your handy with a toolbox you could almost fit yourself a fmic and hybrid turbo lol

wouldn't even get my screenwash filled up at a stealership

Skoda said the turbo blew and bits have broken off and gone into the intercooler. To be truthful I wouldn't know where to start with regards to doing it myself. I've got a list of numbers of some local garages so going to give them a call round tomorrow.
