clutch problem

Featured Replies

hi,

I was driving my car last friday, when all of a sudden i hear a bang, revs shoot up and a heavy engine break. Pulled the car to the side, engine seemed running a bit rough. turned off engine. Went out too check if i couls see something wrong with the master/slave cylinder, but could not see to well. Started up the car.. (still a bit rough).. luckily i was on slight down hill and managed to put it in gear and drove it the mechanic.

The mechanic found the master cylinder was faulty and he replaced it. On connecting everything back up, then the slave cylinder gave way and leaked oil. We got a new slave and the same thing happened. We replaced the slave cylinder again.. and the same thing happened.

What else could be wrong?

rev shooting up... how is your oil level?

Was the clutch ok when the engine was not running? or did it fail before your started the engine?

the revs shot up when i heard the bang while driving the car..(everything was fine before this point)... the clutch pedal remained down. the revs shot up because somehow it shifted down.

the engine oil level is ok. the clutch oil level was not ok after the incident. But of course it was topped up when the master/slave cylinder were replaced and bled.

You have to use an easy bleed kit to bleed the system as the seals collapse when using pump the pedal method.

thanks... this was tried as well....

perhaps there's damage in the clutch.. gearbox is coming out now.

but i could not hear any strange noises before the fault occurred...

Leyland - I presume your posts all reference the clutch master and slave cylinders?

I'm wondering if there is a leak in the brake servo allowing the engine to suck hydraulic fluid in from there.

Hi,

Yes both master and slave cylinders for the clutch where replaced.

The slave was replaced twice and leaked immediately.

Apparently there's something pushing the slave out too far.. That's why the gearbox will be pulled out and checked for damage. We fear the damage the DMF as there was a loud band when the clutch broke down.

Are you sure the slave is defective and it is not the pipe? I had the flared end of the pipe fail at the slave end.

Sounds like poor design if the slave at full travel can cause damage.....

replaced with valeo 4 pc smf clutch kit. came out good so far. no leaks in the slave. different feel in the clutch pedal and no noticeable (to me) increase in vibrations, though it does

feel more direct then before... we'll see tomorrow.

the borken clutch, had broken pressure plate and burned clutch pad (broken too)... strange it didn't slip before it broke...

Where did you get your Valeo SMF kit from?

I've been thinking about this for a while but my local VAG specialist won't fit it. Says it could cause more damage in the long run but the Valeo website says something about a spring loaded plate to replicate the DMF damping???

Anyway, glad you got it sorted but any thoughts appreciated.

Cheers

i'm based in Malta. If you can find it here, you can probably find it at your corner grocery shop in uk :)

the part number is 826317

http://www.hamar.cz/clutches/202-clutch-kit-valeo-826317-3276428263175.html

got it for €320

the original dmf kit was €930

it feels different..grabs earlier.. but it's ok.. i'll soon get used to it. I cannot notice any increase in vibrations inside the cabin.

i'll be happy if it lasts another 90k km :)
