Loos of oomph following cam belt change and service

Featured Replies

Have just had cambelt, waterpump, changed. And full service and today notice absloutely no oomph whatsoever. Really struggle to get going. Have disconnected maf and no change. Would this point to the maf being at fault?

Have tried to look for answers but so many other posts.....................

Cheers

Andy

timing could be out - get it back in and rechecked

yep would take it straight back to the garage as its prob out a tooth

Right. Only had it done yesterday, and haven`t had to chance to actually drive it any distance til this morning. I notice when I switch off it doesnt sound right either it sort of lumps to a stop. I take it its no good getting a maf just in case?

no its will be out a tooth so by putting a maf on wont cure that lol

This makes the 3rd reply out of 3 that thinks the cam and/or fuel timing is a tooth out. Take a hint!

Oh believe me , I`ve taken the hint....its back in tomorrow morning...Still bought a maf as dare say I`ll need one at some point..

Thanks one and all, I`ll post the result tomorrow!!

Andy

I wouldnt drive the car much either if it has jumped a tooth & not done any damage, keep using it & you may not be so lucky, either way its the garages duty to rectify their mistake.

Hmmmm, have to drive around 30 miles to get home and a mile to the garage, better take it steady by the sound of it....

Thats really bad that the garage didnt test your car properly and pick up on it before letting you collect it. :o

I am surprised as we use them all the time and they`ve never let us down before..Mind you the guy did say " I see what you mean about being a bit sluggish, and why you want a remap" unfortunately it was never as sluggish before it went in as it was when it came out!! And the annoying bit is I am hoping to have her remapped next week so I want it right before then!!

Well, I`ve just made the phone call to find out what the outcome was and despite checking everything timing related, there was nothing amiss...However, I`m told that there was a problem with the variable vein turbo being stuck in the wrong position....I`m also told this is a common problem but a cleaning kit is now available (which has been ordered) and this will solve the problem.

Anyone any opinion on that?

Andy

the cleaning kit doesnt work !!!

and this is a common problem on these

you will need to take turbo off and strip it and clean the internal mechanism and all will be good

OK, I`ve calmed down considerably now and feel the time is right to write the following.....

Firstly, I should point out that this was not done at a Skoda dealers, but, the place where it was done have always done our servicing , cambelts etc for the last 6 or 7 years with no problems what so ever.

Secondly, I am absolutely spitting feathers and anything else that comes to mind after being told over the phone about timing being checked and all the timing marks being correct etc etc blah , blah ,blah and then being told about variable veins etc etc in the turbo being at fault , cleaning kits etc etc blah, blah, blah to find that when I get home and take the car up the road, it is still exactly the bl**dy same...i.e no go what so ever.

I am actually contemplating humble pie in the morning and going to the local Skoda dealership and saying "I`ve been a complete d*ck please sort my car out"

The car has no welly behind it at all, it still stops with a lump when ignition turned off.

My questions are...

Should I go to the Skoda dealers and hope they can fix it , and if yes and its something that my local place has cocked up on, then present them with the bill?

Is there any possibility that it could be the turbo, and if yes, why was it fine before it had cambelt change and service done?

Is there any possibility it could be the MAF sensor as when disconnected it makes no difference what so ever to the running?

Long winded I know, but I need to get to the bottom of this before I am had up for murder!!!

Any comments /opinions appreciated...

Andy

Check for an overboost fault - that can indicate sticky vanes. However as the car was fine pre-cambelt change I would think the garage are the problem here.

If you have bought a new MAF stick it on, can't do any harm, assuming it wasn't a 50p jobbie from ebay :giggle:

If your remove the vacuum hose from the n75 to actuator on the turbo you should be able to suck on it and get a smooth movement on the control rod for the vanes on the turbo.... on both suck and release - that will help to show if the vanes (or mechanism) is sticky. It seems more common place for the mechanism to become rusty these days - and no cleaning kit is going to cure that other than taking it apart.

Sorry to hear about your problem!

I had my cambelt changed by an independent garage, they screwed it up!

When I got car back it was down on power, had different engine note and a rattle.

So I took the car back to them, they had the car all day when I got it back they said nothing was wrong, but somehow all the problems were fixed.

Just to say I know how you feel mate, next time I will go to Steelers.

Best of luck.

Well, I can`t believe what has just happened. After calling at the Skoda dealers asking for a large piece of Humble pie, they couldn`t do anything until middle of next week anyway so I came back with tail well and truly between the legs and suddenly had little or no brakes as well as a gutless wonder.. I managed to get home ok, and was chatting to my neighbour who is a bit of a whizz mechanically and he said it seemed like there was a loss of vacuum somewhere which would affect not only the performance but the brakes as well....lo and behold when we took the engine cover off and started tracing the pipework, there was a t piece with only one pipe connected and two pipes swaying in the breeze..connected them up and bingo, I now have brakes and the oomph is back as it should be.....

,

you owe that man a few pints

I hope you get hold off the place that did the cam belt change and get a refund for any extra cash spent on it.

As it looks like thay left them two pipes off.

I am taking it back first thing Monday morning and will be venting my spleen at them have no fear. The worrying thing is that the wife could have been driving when the brakes failed, and wrecked my baby.....The most important thing though is I don`t like being lied to , which I obviously have been. Variable veins sticking my a**e. It took the guy next door approx 10 mins to find the problem and he is not a supposed "turbo expert" !!!

I assume by 'baby', you mean 'car'? Never mind the wife then?
