Scary moment

Featured Replies

Today I thought my engine was going to tip itself all over the road, doing 50 in 4th and gently accelerating away and all of a sudden one he'll of a noise came from the engine/gearbox sounded as if the gear was not in properly slowed down and changed down then up , then it was fine never had this before 1,200 on the clock, proceeded to drove up to 100 all fine gear change fine ,very strange did sound awful like a bag of spanners,it's fine now any ideas anyone had similar cr1.6tdi 105bhp engine

just wondering wether the revs dropped too low and was stopping itself stalling, you know what rpm you were doing?

I think the DPF thingy causes the engine to make a horrible noise, a bit like the engine is trying to eat a bag of spanners if it comes on? I have never heard mine as I do a lot of motorway miles and it isn't needed. I believe it does this to reach a hot enough temperature to burn off the carbon build up.

About 2000 rpm , I don't think it was stalling I was accelerating to overtake sounded really awful I've done over 1k and never got this before may have been the DPF if it was bloody hell scary moment

Well been to the dealers and definate not the DPF should not make any noise at alll, so I am a little worried may have jumped or not engaged gear properly

people on here have said that when the burn cycle starts the engine runs very rough. The DPF itself doesn't make a noise.

Maybe this, engine really was rough, bag of spanners took it down to 3rd and then back to 4 th , then turned the taps on , took her to 110 ish and was fine

110 kph perhaps....

Engines really only run a bit rougher when regenerating while at idle. Most people wouldnt even realise the car was regenerating when cruising at speed. Even my PD engined Greenline is a little 'lumpier' at idle during regen. There are many who think that just because they havent noticed a regen means the car hasnt had one. Even with motorway miles I very much doubt things get hot enough for sustained regen. Regen NEVER sounds like a bag of spanners. It could be noisier exhaust or less power available. Also engines tend to 'run on' a little more between gear changes.

Generally when mechanical things go sour, ie bags of spanners its unlikely to suddenly get better. My opinion for what its worth is a period of missfueling and incorrect injection timing. It is possible that a combination of accelerating and the initiation of regen taking in to account all the other monitored engine systems the car got a little 'confused'. My old petrol 1.2 Fabia would do something similar occasionally. Accelerate through a few gears and it would pass.

If your bag of spanners definition means clanging metal then thats different. If it sounded rough, spluttery, jerky, knocking sounds and gutless I go with messed up injection and/or boost control issues.

Yes private road lol, this motor is fantastic the previous superb I had used to tell me a 80 ish that it was not happy but this cr engine is smooth and seamless and does not complain at high speeds

Cheeky git! , if I don't get 125-130 out of this thing , I will be very surprised don't know how it states 118 mph

Don't think he was being cheeky, more trying to stop you admitting in public that you had vastly exceeded the speed limit! lol

Oh , prrivate road lol, perfect for lead foot!

To be honest sounds to me like it wasnt in gear properly. If it were a mechanical problem it would have either caused the car to break down or would have been more terminal

agreed, gear not engaged properly, would work until you tried a bit of throttle then just popped out grating the cogs, a gearchange would have sorted it... no harm done if this was the case, my learners used to do that in the punto occasionally, and that geabox went onto 107,000 miles without issues

Indeed, is often the case the gearbox is not quite in gear but shifter is in enough not to pop out, sounds horrible but like you say a gearbox is designed to take alot of abuse. I grind the gears in my Golf every now and again on an off day, think we all do haha.

cheers Leeds - exactly my point. Can't be too careful on forums, i'm surprised that there hasn't been an outcry yet :p

Well let's start one then… 118? On what kind of road? Save it for the track my friend, and stay well away from me and my kids when you have another delusional episode that makes you think you can safely control a car at that speed.

Was that OK? :wonder:

more dangerous driving slow anyway

Eh? :S

it's OK I am a professional racing driver…

… and a total bell-end :dull:

I just want to say that a 1.6 CR 105 wouldnt do 125-130mph, no chance. It's high gearing and lack of top end go will limit its top speed to around the level Skoda claim in the handbook. Speedo's tend to read about 5-10mph out anyway, gets worse at higher speed so an indicated 130 will probably be 118 - 123mph depending on spedo calibration. You'd need a bloody long run and probably a decent downhill (in Germany!) to see it though.

Chill - out ! Fella's take a chill pill!!,you need to take stuff with a pinch of salf!

Back to the original topic I had a similar experience today.

The car was ticking over and I was outside, suddenly there was a grinding noise for a couple of seconds which stopped then started again.

My first thought was starter motor cutting in for no reason but when I got round to drivers side I found gear lever not properly in neutral. Either I did not fully disengage gear or I knocked the lever getting a box out that was in passenger footwell.
