It doesn't sound like a typical head gasket failure.

Is the radiator top hose getting hot?

Are the fans cutting in? (both units if you're running the air con)

Any signs of mayonaisse and/or oil in the coolant?

its been like this for 10tho and i service it every 5k top hose gets hot. the fans have kicked in once since ive had it. bought it in 2008.even put temp switch on and thermostat no oil in water or water in oil.even bought two header caps one from ebay then thought it could be falty. so got one from vw.the water comes out the over flow from header bottle.put a glove over the over flow pipe for couple of days and had water in when i checked it....

ahhh, exactly what my issue was, that miraculously has coem back! on my 200 mile drive it'll use about 1-2L, seems very odd as mine is pushing out the the cap (vent) i know this as i bagged my bottle and it was all there at the end of the journey, its as if its pressurising too much? im not in a position to fault find atm due to being at uni but when i get home in 3 weeks ill be stripping everything back to find why this is, im yet to change my thermostat as its so cheap its worth a shot! Plese keep me updated if you solve it! as i will for you! Ahh also it doesnt seem to overheat althouygh at slow speeds and minimal throttle the temp gauge goes down 10 degrees or so but then i speed up and it pops back to 90, i think the cts could do with being changed also!

Coolant Temp Sensor (CTS) i a little out of ideas aswell to be honest! its as if its somehow building too much pressure i nthe system and dumping out of the tank, not sure what could cause this build up but as i said im going to be dismateling soon to try and sort it as it a little bit of an inconvenient
