Coilovers versus spring + shock kit

Featured Replies

Heya, I have got some money together to lower my Mk2 L&K... I am torn between getting a set of AP Coilovers, or a set of FK shocks and springs...

i am swaying towards getting the shocks and springs as I have a spinal injury and a trapped sciatic nerve - as i know coilovers are really really hard.. the cost is also a big thing.

I drive the car purely for pleasure, I don't do track days, I just want the reduced arch gap that lowering gives, and want to minimize the crashy effect.

I was looking at this kit; http://www.dcperformance.co.uk/cheap/246803/skoda/fk-high-tec-suspension-kit/fk99sk024.html

And the coilovers I was looking at: http://www.madmotors.co.uk/suspension/skoda-suspension/skoda-octavia-suspension/skoda-octavia-coilovers/ap-coilovers-skoda-octavia-1z-front-strut-diameter-55mm-2-0tfsi-1-9tdi-2-0sdi-td-03.html

My APs weren't crashy until I dropped the fronts all the way.

min were crashy around medway purely because the roads were so bad. If i were you and your after lower better suspension, why not get some vRS shocks/springs of some of the guys with uprated suspension.

I have vrs springs and shocks, unused apart from the 100 mile or so drive to Awesome. If interested pm me.

Coilovers crashy? Well it depends what you buy I suppose.

My weitecs are not crashy at all.

Btw I would never buy any product from a web site called "mad motors" on principle...

Springs and shocks are a more comfortable option but if you stick with a good quality coilover kit and don't go too low you should be fine.

Give me a shout if you need any prices or more info.

Damian what would you suggest to give OEM ride quality, but lower?

Snap. More than happy with my Weitecs too, gives a decent drop as well as less body roll but doesn't sacrifice comfort to the point of it being in any way annoying.

I've got Koni FSD's ( the latest revised 4090 kit) and Eibach springs on my 2010 vrs the ride is superb on all but the most pothole strewn roads, even then its better than the stock setup, also no diving and squatting with the FSD's....had them fitted for 10k now and no problems whatsoever  like you I wanted subtle lowering and a better ride....thats exactly what I got.

Thats the exact set up i'm going for

As mentioned the Koni FSDs are a good option but not really designed for lowering a great deal. Something like the KW springs and shocks kit is in my opinion a better choice.

I've had the konis and now have the kws ,i think i would go the kw route personally , more sporty feelbut not crashy

I went for the Koni FSDs on standard springs for the same reason of having a bad back. I kinda wish I put the Eibach springs on and lowered a tame 20mm although the current set up is a reasonable compromise

after a bit of research and looking around I am now a proud owner of VMaxx coilovers. I know the Bilstein gang will be looking down their noses at me but I chose this kit as I've been told they're a bit more comfortable than FKs etc, and the price point was excellent too.

Thanks to Damien at DPM for sorting it all out, very professional and friendly service and helpful even before the purchase.

Getting my mate Faz at Specialist Tyres in Letchworth to fit them now, with an initial drop of around 55mm!

I think brimma also has vmaxx.

55mm drop? Really!?

At -45mm mine caught a speed bump.. I'm now at -35mm which looks great, rides great and does not try to smooth out road humps.

Post some pics and let us know how you get on lowrider-stylee.

:p

ETA: Mine at -35mm earlier today:

Nik, let me know how the ride comfort is, Im still trying to decide, would like to go that low, but terrified of ruining the ride of my beloved VRS
