Chips For Tea

Featured Replies

I would like to chip my VRS.What would be the drew backs if any.

Hiya Paul, and welcome to the site  (I'm sure the official welcome will follow soon)

As for Chipping & its drawbacks, there seems to be 2 main ones.

1) Warranty Issues. If the car is still under warranty, check with your dealer and ask if they will honour the warranty on a chipped Skud, some will, some wont.

2) Insurance. Ask Your insurer's opinion. Some will simply refuse to cover you, some will load your premium by what usually seems to be a random amount plucked from thin air.

If you get around those 2 probs, your only other decision is which tuning company to use......thats a task in itself :)

one solution to both those problems is to not say anything.. not that I would condone this but dependent upon what sort of "chip" you go for it may well be undetectable by both dealer and insurer.;)

Paul - whatever you do - it won't be undetectable, if anybody has a good enough reason to go looking.

If your dealer isn't particulary looking for any evidence of tuning, he probably won't find it - and if you're lucky enough to have a dealer with a "relaxed" attitude to tuning, it probably wouldn't matter anyway.

It will be an issue as far as insurance is concerned, though. Insurance companies are really keen on finding a reason not to pay out - and any sort of tuning will be (in their eyes) a good enough reason. if they haven't been told

OK - rant over - the decision is yours.

BTW - Welcome to Briskoda

Mike , I must agree with you , I have told the insurance company , but I have no intention of telling the dealer .

Anyway welcome Paul !

I know where your'e coming from with the rant...

a "friend" at a broker's tipped me off that the insurers are not very confident about a court battle over a pure software update - as this could - and probably would deemed to be optimisation - especially on TDi's as the chip can easily be justified on economy grounds alone.

I wouldnt want to be the one arguing with them but im of the opinion that they wouldnt have a cast iron case - obviously the minute you remove an ECU and solder something your screwed but Revo?? does this mean if a dealer changes any setting using VAG-COM or mercedes's Star-Diag ( which has dealer changeable fuel optimisation) your insurance would be invalid?

or maybe we live in a society where the insurer's are acting over and above their status... (having just recieved a second letter asking for proof if the factory fitted, standard on all TVR's since 1996 alarm is fitted to our tuscan:rolleyes: )

got to agree with the two above.

granted, with the newer serial port programming, unless the insurance bods put the car on a RR, it would be difficult to detect.

however, do remember that insurance companies aren't stupid and they soon get to know the tuners favourites, so may be extra vigilant.

i have told my insurance company ( serially remapped with no physical change ) and did with RS(APR chip) - i would never risk that many thousands for the sake of maybe a couple of hundred a year.

if in doubt, don't do it.

all imho of course.

oh and welcome to briskoda :D

hey im not trying to start a war... im having a custom map soldered in so will have to tell...and the suspension and the wing etc...

but if I went for Revo style I would be very tempted not to.

anyway to drag this back to topic...

the only downsides would appear to bein your wallet... but you saved thousands buying a Skoda in the firstplace so whos counting;)

Some interesting comments above on insurance. Most if not all insurers have a caveat in their policies that any failure to disclose facts material to the insurance or any inaccuracies in your answers may invalidate your insurance cover in whole or in part. Facts material to the insurance are matters or information which may influence your insurer as to the acceptability or otherwise of an insurance proposal or renewal and must be disclosed at the earliest opportuunity.

I could go the REVO route and have my 4X4 chip flashed, opt for the removable switch which fits into the OBD port and enables the car to be returned to standard tune, and not tell my insurer (Norwich Union Direct). But having asked already, I am aware that my insurer will not insure my car if tuned. I could take a chance and have the car chipped without telling my insurer. I might well have no problems with warranty too if I return the car to standard tune each time I take it to a dealer. But lets take the scenario where I am involved in a major accident which involves me being hospitalised, and the insurers find the tuning switch still in the OBD port when they check the wreckage of my car. I'm not going to have much insurance cover, am I, nor will insurers touch me for any sort of insurance in the future. And what if I cause a tank transporter to swerve on the M1, leading to a catastrophic accident, or my car leaves the M62 and ends up in the path of a train. It really doesn't bear thinking about, does it? Where insurance is concerned, it isn't a case of honesty is the best policy: rather, it is a case of honesty is the only policy. That's my opinion FWIW.

cant argue with you Denis... but lighten up im sure your drivings not that bad;)

I agree with Denis re insurance. Warranty is always rather more grey.

Denis - presuming that a remap is still a possibility for you, you also have the option with Jabba for the adjustable boost controller which is easily unplugged and what's left is hidden away. Not that you could unplug it if you were unconscious... By the way, found that I can drive the car like a diesel if I want to and still make ok progress by not going over 2800rpm as the extra torque starts low enough. Normally I don't go much above 6800rpm though :)
