Is this normal???

Featured Replies

Hi,

My idle speed is poor. The RPM needle varies up and down and the car tends to shudder. The dealer replaced the engine speed sensor (this was noted in a fault code) but it has made no difference. Now the dealer says its normal, although they're going to talk to Skoda Technical on Monday.

Are other people's idle speeds rock steady? That's what I've been used to in other cars. Am I just being paranoid

This is a 2 litre petrol BTW - has anyone else on the forum got one of these?

I took a Quicktime movie of my rev counter (sorry, it's 4MB...):

What do you think?

Thanks,

Ivan.

Coolant temp sensor or the throttle valve needs resetting i'd imagine.

don't look too bad to me, was expecting an idle similar to one of my old cars which would randomly rev upto about 2k or 2.5k then fall to about 700 nearly stalling then up again. did it at random be it cold or warm(both engine and outside). garage never solved it but not my problem now

I have a 3-year old 2.0 Elegance (new one coming end of March) that has never had this problem. I had it on my previous car - a Mk2 Golf GTI. It was an unserviceable 'black box' that would have cost

Idle speed? As in the engine idle speed? Usually if the car is exposed to alot of heat the rpm hits a little over 1,000rpm in idle. Don't know why it does that, but i did notice tat it does that only when

a) ur in a hot country, like me,

B) uve been running ur car like a getaway car

as long as it does this only for a very minimal period of time, like say about 10 to 20 seconds, it's normal.

Shuddering? haha...i think i know what ur talking about...in idle the car shudders a little from time to time? more of a feeling than a visibility? ive got that too. its nothing. it does it only once in a while, dont worry about it. Ive got a 2.0 too:D

Mike,

This also is a 3 year old 2.0 Elegance. On yours then, can you confirm that the rev counter stays nice and steady, and you don't feel the engine shaking and shuddering?

Fabia 2.0RS,

You say yours shudders from time to time? Do you mean every few seconds or every few minutes, or once in a while? Mine does this every few seconds, with quite an apparent shake of the engine if I watch it with the bonnet open.

I'm half tempted to find another 2.0 at a garage and go and 'test drive' it to see if it is any different. Does anyone know if there are any differences in the 2.0, or which VWs if any they are also fitted in? (I might find one quicker in a VW dealer.)

Update: the dealer says that Skoda technical knows of no specific issue (whatever that means) but has been told to try cleaning the throttle body. They are not saying it will make any difference though...

Thanks,

Ivan.

I seem to remember this is done because the engine gets cut down on fuel as much as possible, nearly causing a stall, to reduce emissions - nearly but not quite a stall of course, which is why idling a modern engine may be a bit rougher than on an old one perhaps.

i cant see your video but i can tell you that i get a shuttering with my fabia (1.4) its 2 years old, the needle keeps waving betweem 0.8 rpm and 0.9 rpm, as though the car is about to turn off, its annoying and causes the whole car to shake, ive went to the skoda service center, and they said that they cant see anything and its all ok, but they are idiots there and i didnt expect anything from them. still have the problem and im simply trying my best to ignore it.

Both my 1.4 MPI (8v) Furbies have exhibited poor idle. Dealers never identified any particular fault. I tend to agree with WW VRS in that it's a characteristic of lean burn engines and emission regs. Doesn't feel great though when sat at traffic lights and passengers (who admit to knowing/caring naff all about cars) notice the symptom and ask why your motor is hunting and surging and would it be wiser to call a taxi !!

My 16v Furby could also idle spectacularly badly - but that was due to an ECU conflict with the gas conversion so you could hardly blame the car for that.

There is a cure however - dump the petrol engines and invest in a vRS or TDI. That's my plan anyway.

Cheers,

Pete

It's better than it revving its nutz off which sometimes happens on my Rover, 1500 rpm 'idle' when it gets into a state. Only way to fix it is to turn off the engine and start it again. Something dodgy goin on there but that engine does get trashed very, very hard and it's done 92k on the clock now, going at 70ish mph mostly (and then some)
