1.4 Tsi vRS. Which bloomin oil?!

Featured Replies

I was confused myself with oil choice and after narrowing it down to most agreeing on Castrol Edge as an oil of choice, I emailed their tech's to see their verdict on which grade to buy;

Dear Mr XXXX,

Thank you for your e-mail.

Castrol EDGE 5W-30 carries the VW 504 00 specification which actually also covers VW 502 00 and so this would be a very good oil for your Skoda. Alternatively you can use EDGE 5W-40 (including the Turbo Diesel version - you can ignore the name, it's also very good for petrol engines) which carries the VW 502 00 specification as do a number of our other products. Our 10W-40 products meet VW 501 01, but this is not sufficient for your vehicle.

I hope this answers your query. Please contact us again if you require any further information.

Regards.

  • 1 year later...

Just come back to this thread after reading different peoples choices of brand and viscosity.. any other views on their preferred oil choices?

mine was changed with syntium 5000 sx for 3 oil changes (10k 20k 30k) and 40k is the shell stuff...... it never uses even a drop of oil..... the syntium stuff is what BMW use for their deisel engines!

VW's own "Official" oil is Quantum Platinum 5W / 40 (VW 502 Spec.) for fixed service intervals.

Quantum Longlife III 5W / 30 (VW 504 Spec.) for variable service intervals.

I get Platinum 5W / 40 from local Skoda dealer , £29 for 5 litres.

This Should end the discussion :)

All oils which have written on the box the above alongside your engine will be fine. Please note from your Car ID Label which service regime your engine is on.

All oils without the appropriate to your engine VW spec put in your motor may give SUK the reason to reject your warranty claims.

And the dipsticks

Oils designed for diesel engines often have more detergents in , they will do no harm to a petrol engine but are not normally required since petrol engines arent as dirty as diesels

Its a good tip to use a cheap diesel oil as a flushing oil if you buy a used car that has a flaky service history and running it for a short time really cleans it out

As for my i use Castrol Edge in the Fabia

OK,that's fine, same as my handbook, but still a bit confused re my vRS.

It's coded Q16,so that's variable service interval which is stated as "according to the service interval display,at the latest 2 years"

Now I thought the vRS was on a one year at most schedule?

AND,given the Q16 code, which means variable servicing, that means 504.00 spec oil and,as far as I know, there are no oils that are 5/40 that fall into that spec.

As stated, this is important, because given an engine failure in the warranty period you wouldn't want your claim invalidated because the oil had been tested and found to have been incorrect spec.

I've got the 5 year warranty and my thoughts were move from 5/30 to 5/40 after the mileage has gone past ,say,30k,but this now looks a no-no.

I am going by 'fixed service' (but changing the oil more often than that in that fixed service period)

so

'1.4 ltr / 132kw tsi , VW 502 00

Castrol Edge 5w /40 suits my needs.

£6.99 a litre at 'Home Bargain' was a good buy.

I do prefer the VW Polo Owners Manual compared to the Fabia one.

They have the Polo GTi Twin Charger with the same Dipstick & a slightly better Oil checking description.

George,I hear what you say but you haven't addressed my point..

Q16 = variable servicing

Variable servicing on vRS = 504.00 spec oil

Therefore no other than 504.00 spec is approved by Skoda for the vRS.

I can't see where you are permitted, when your book carries the Q16 stamp,to decide to convert to a different service schedule so you can use 502.00 spec oil.

Sorry if I'm missing something here?

Cheers for your opinion on it George. I had already read the handbook and many websites such as Opie Oils which declare the VW 502.00 fixed schedule. I was planning on Castrol Edge 5W/40 but also saw Mobil 1 0W/40 as well. Just wanted to find what other people were using, not necessarily what oil fits into the category

You saw that George the castrol, I did post here a couple f weeks ago regarding this bargain

re 'Servicing' 'Fixed Servicing',,, an 'Oil Change Service' @ 10,000 miles involves an Oil Change & some checks.

'Oil Changes & a Filter' should not be confused with 'A Service' IMO.

Services, Maintaining a car, changing Pollen, Fuel Filters, Spark Plugs, Air Filters, Checking Brakes, Suspension, Replacing parts as required.

Before the vRS was shown as variable, it was 10,000 miles or 1 year,

20,000 miles or 2 years 'Inspection Service'.

Service at 3 years & Brake Fluid change, Service at 4 years and Spark Plugs.

(All dependent on mileage obviously, many are doing as many miles in a month as other take 12 months to do.)

Now if that is the minimum for checking a car thats fine with many.

I think even if your Oil does not get changed 12 monthly or at 10,000 miles, the car needs checked or Serviced,

but thats maybe just me.

Simply put, i think an 'Oil & Filter change' is not really a Service.

Longer Life Oil is probably better value for those doing high mileage annually,

no idea if variable servicing with Skoda means if the oil is not getting changed, do not get your car Inspected & checked.

Sorry for participating - interrupting this thread but I have a question too. Please be kind with me.

My engine is an 1.2Tsi 77Kw and I noticed that ever 6.500 to 8.000Km tends to consume 500ml of oil and after that no oil consumption to service. First oil change at 12.500km (1st year) was Castrol Edge 5w-30 504/507. Second oil change at 26.500Km (2nd year) used Valvoline SynPower-III 5w-30 504/507. My car is mostly used (90%) for daily commute to work and back with steep uphills and one engine stop in the middle of the route. Total route is 3.5 Km to work.

You are kindly requested to tell me what the difference between 5w-30 and 5w-40 is. And if I am going to use a 5w-40 oil at next service will eliminate the oil consumption.

Thank you in advance, Stratos.

JerryT would be the best person to give you an overview of differences between oil grades as he's a pro in the field.

In a sentence 5W30 is "thinner" at high temps and loads than 5W40. the latter number tells you how "thick" the oil is at high temps. this seals the bores better but creates more friction and potentially higher temps. You should be fine with 5W40 if it has the appropriate VW 5xx xx rating for your cars service schedule (fixed or varied).

5w-30 also burns quicker plus its used to maximise mpg ? As for it being thinner and burns quicker this may be the issue regarding usage ? , several member have said after using the 40 oil issues virtually disappear ?

Beemers use 10W60 to get the performance from their stronger motors and all M range.

Thank you both of you. I think you answered 90% of my inquiry. Its up to me now to search and check the rest such as engine and environment temperature, mpg (we call it lt / 100Km) etc.

Anytime and you are welcome :)

Anyone tried the Mobil 1 "0W/40"? VW 502 00
