TDi's - 110bhp v 100bhp PD

Featured Replies

Does anybody else on here run a 110 TDi and a 100 TDi PD?

I have a 2002 110 Elegance hatch and my wife has a 2003 100PD VW Bora S.

I know the PD engine is well known for its 'punchy' performance and power/torque delivery, but the older VE pump injection engine should have 10bhp more. After driving both cars extensively, the 100PD is much quicker mid range - it would leave my 110 Elegance for dead! However fuel consumption on the 100PD is much worse - 5-10mpg typically.

Just wondered whether my 110 is down on power OR the Bora has been mapped (although I have checked with both previous owners who both say that it hasn't). My Elegance has 89k on the clock (one previous owner before me); the Bora 91k. Got no issues with 'overboost', and runs well but it could be ready for a new MAF as it is the orignal. Have just had the pump IQ settings adjusted and the pressure regulating valve repaired which has made a bit of difference.

Does anyone else have similar experiences?

Dan

Most PD engines tend to produce more than the stated figues

Do you know the history of the Bora? If it has been remapped it WOULD be like night and day.

Or many 110 TDIs live unknowingly with various issues which sap power but don't seem to harm mpg that much.

Like mine :-) if my bag of spanners passes her MOT on Friday 13th (May), then I might look at treating her to a new MAF, n75 and MAP to see if I can cure the problems once and for all. Oh and then she can have a cambelt change too (180k)

IIRC the PD has more torque even though the bhp is less.

Yes, that was my first thought, but I looked up the figures and they are very similar, unlike the PD130 that has loads more, but the PD100 remps to give a lot more torque than even a remapped 110 - well if the figures I quickly Googled are to be believed.

In my experience (I've owned both engines), the 110tdi revs more freely than the PD100 (bizarre given the 110 is an older style of engine). Torque delivey is more brutal in the PD100 too, although I don't think the stock figures are much different IIRC. As for standard power outputs, My 110tdi produced a few bhp over standard when RR'd with 120k on the clock, as did my PD100 fabia - so not much difference there, either.

I suspect the different in feeling is entirely down to the delivery from the engine. A very smooth profile curved NA petrol engine, revved from mid range, doesn't always feel massively quick, but would be comparable (if not faster) than a similarly powered diesel that would feel much much faster due to the torque delivery. 'Feel' I think is the operative word of this conclusion.

Contradicting what I said earlier, but superchips actually remap the 110 to slightly more torque. Anyway:-

Standard both the PD100 and TDi110 torque/power are very similar (the scale is shifted on one so it looks different but isn't), except the 110 possibly tails off a bit quicker and the PD100 has a rounder curve. Not really a wall of torque in comparison, which is more evident on the PD130 upwards. Are they geared the same? (I can't be bothered with more Googling!)

AFAIK, they share the same gearbox. The only way to check your theory would be to actually plot them against each other at a suitable venue.
