Hi all.

I have a Rallye Green Fabia vRS Estate on order, and currently I am waiting for the build week as it was only ordered this week.

The dealer rang me to say that they have taken in a Red Fabia vRS Estate and are willing to sell it for me for £800 cheaper than my deal price. (plus I would then have it straight away as opposed to waiting)

I've seen the car (and am having a test drive tomorrow) and have to say it is immaculate.

This car was registered on 30/12/2010 and has 3,000 on the clock.

Now, the thing is - do I hold out and wait for the one I ordered (I do rather like the Green!)

Or, do I do the swap now - get one with a nice colour (but not the one I ordered) The second hand car has heated front seats (I'm not bothered, but my dad had them before, and they are quite nice), rear parking sensors, and I think cruise control. (I only ordered cruise control, and that's the only extra I really want)

If I have the new one, I can have the 2.25% APR and it'll cost me £231 a month after trade in to have it.

However, If I take in the second hand one, we're talking £211 a month - as they cannot offer the same APR being as it is a used car.

So, what do I do?

I'm tempted to have the used car, but in my mind i'd be spending more on the interest and it basically boils down to saving £300 on a new one, with more extras, and 3K and 1 owner on the clock. More extras than I wanted is always nice, and if I do wait for a new one, I won't feel as bad with the trade in - I've lost a lot of money in 6 weeks - whereas this would actually turn out to be a lot of money over 6 months by the time I've got my nice new green car on the drive....

What would you do?

EDIT: I could probably wangle a better deal on the used one as I could pay over 2 years - but then I could also pay over 2 years for the new one :D

I'd probably go used to be honest. Sounds like a decent well looked after car; not much can be done to a car in 3k miles anyway and obvious damage would show. Waiting times on new ones are ridiculous, I would have taken a nearly new estate if I'd been able to get my hands on one!

Yeah, it is very very tempting.

I'll only save £384 if I take the 2nd hand one though - not £800, so extra premium in having it now.

However, it is ruddy tempting.

I'll be taking a test drive tomorrow - I wonder if the dealer have been sneaky and not ordered mine, thinking I'll buy that one?

It is more cost but then there's a lot less wait!

arrrgggghhhhh :D

EDIT: If I take the used one over 2 years, it works out £589 in interest. New one over 3 years is £526.50, so on those grounds were talking very little difference...

go for it mate. Less agonising wait, more options. What's not to like? 3000 miles is nothing really.

I take it you think the red is OK. I think it looks great tbh - what wheeks does it have?

Gorebrush, decision decisions.

1. If it does not have cruise control walk away if you really want this especially if you are used to using it. Biggest mistake i made with mine was to take the showroom car (bog standard) and forgoe cruise. Note that at present it can not be retrofitted.

2. Can't see the finance issue, 231 new of 211 used?

3. Is it really what you want - only you can answer this. Appreciate you will want to get your hands on it as soon as possible and i do not blame you. BUT is it honestly what you really want? You elected to have the green (sorry i think that is horrible, i know, heresy) so is red a real substitute?

4. Is it cheap enough? This is a 60 plate, and there was some discussion on here back in February when people were being told to collect their carsbefore the 1st March as to what the potential trade in value may be between a 60 and an 11 plate car registered days apart. I did for 5 minutes consider trading in my vRS after two weeks against another new one jus to get the cruise control. Walked away when i was only offered 11.5 k trade in for three months down the line with 5k miles on the clock.

Appreciate, not very helpful to you though, but at the end of the day, only you can decide

There's little to compare to that feeling climbing into your brand new car and smelling the newness.

Waiting is always a bind, but strongly suggest WAIT.!!!!! emoticon-0148-yes.gifemoticon-0148-yes.gifemoticon-0148-yes.gifemoticon-0148-yes.gifemoticon-0148-yes.gifemoticon-0148-yes.gifemoticon-0148-yes.gifemoticon-0148-yes.gifemoticon-0148-yes.gif

I certainly would wait and lose some sleepless nights in anticipation of what will soon be.LOL

Now I really like green but colour isnt be all and end all.

Cruise again is a nice to have but is certainly very useful and I know I would use it - so that would be a deal breaker

There is no issue on the finance - what I'm saying is that even though the used car is £800 less - I would only save £300 at the end of the 3 years - so it really only means that in real terms that it would be another £300 for a car that is mine - first registration etc. Granted that isn't the be all and end all again - however it would be my car - I would know how it was run in - its my colour... I think

I am answering my own question here :-)

Also - I bought a new car last year and it is nice to know it's yours from the beginning - however this used one has been very well looked after.

I suppose I'll know for sure when I give it a test drive tomorrow. Red is actually a very smart colour too! I won't dismiss it purely on that

My wife thinks I should stick to my guns and wait for my own one - and to be fair I think she is right. Damn my impatience!

You will regret taking the used, not much of a saving and not the one you really want listen to wifey, there right every time lol , if you get the spec in the used that you get in the one on order OK, if not wait lovely smell of a new car and be the first to fart in it lol!

and be the first to fart in it lol!

Well that's clinched it

and eat a maccy and smoke a big havana cigar

take rubbish to the dump

me id wait

Eating a maccy in a car of mine is a crime. And don't even get me started on smoking.

To be fair, the new car smell should still be in a well looked after car at 3000 miles. Ish.

Yeah it would be. Still torn.

Wait for the new one dude. The wait will kill you but "absence makes the heart grow fonder". It's what you ordered and what you really wanted to order and it'll be yours from scratch. I was going to wait and see if a second hand one popped up, but you know what, it's about the same price as a brand new one and I can get it tailor made to my spec. I suggest you do the same. I think you'll thank yourself for it in the end :D

Really depends how you feel after the test drive tomorrow mate.

Myself, I'd probably go for the red one as I could have it asap (never been good at waiting that's why I got one from port :giggle: ). If you enjoy the test drive and can live with the colour and features I say why not go for it!

This is true but I think my head is ruling my heart, and I'll probably wait. Who knows - wait and see what tomorrow brings! Thanks all

For £20 a month if no issues with your current car costing you money in the next 3-4 months I would wait as you will have the car you want and 7 - 8 months newer.

Last October I looked at a 6 month old ex-demonstrator with about 7k on the clock. Once told if I could wait for another £1000 I could have brand new of the same specification I didn't hesitate. I had my choice of colour and options but delayed ordering to be sure of getting an 11 plate so have now a car a year newer.

only £800..definately go for a brand new one, it will likely to be worth more, plus full warranty and you don't know how those 3000miles were driven.

  • Author

Yes, very true - car will be a good 8 months newer and I know how it's been driven from mile 0. I know I ran my Octavia in properly - who knows how this one has been driven - despite being looked after.

Think we have the answer then.

I shall wait, and get my green :-D I'm on holiday next month anyway - when I get back I should hopefully only have 8 weeks to wait which is not an insurmountable amount of time.

Many thanks.

The one other point - if it turns out to be September delivery - then we're talking about a 60 plate vs 61!

Saw it

Test drove it

Bought it

Car was £1300 less than a new one and I'm only borrowing £200 more because finance is a bit more but not by much.

It didnt have cruise but really wasn't a deal breaker.

It does have rear park sensors, climatic, and heated front seats though.

Oh, having it Tuesday!

Might nickname her Thunderbird 2 on the count of it being red and mind bogglingly quick

Lukcy buggar! I've got 4-6 weeks to go :(

Pics?

Yeah I managed to get a snap will upload later as I'm still out.

Gotta love Internet access on a phone

:)

Good man, I saw a red estate at my dealers in Feb which made me look at getting an estate :D

Lol gorebrush, the difference between your two earlier posts is funny. I think you've made the right choice btw.

  • Author

I think it was meant to be. I did the deal on finance for a new one on tuesday. I went off to tesco for my lunch and came out to find a Red Fabia vRS estate 4 spaces away.

That evening the dealer rings me up and tells me they have a red one coming in and I could test drive it.

I mention that I saw one that day but he wasn't sure if it was the same one - didn't have the file to hand.

All this week I've been more interested in a new one but admittedly I was dubious about green. In fact I did all the maths a few times and kept thinking a new one was what I wanted.

Until I get to the dealership - it was the one I saw in tesco this week and it was immaculate. So I drove it - it was outstanding and indeed I wanted it as soon as I saw it.

When I walked back to the salesman and he said he was told to take another £500 off the price, it became a bargain compared to a new one. (told by sales manager - I didn't push for it!) - this was because I had a used car not a new one.
