Pros and cons?

Featured Replies

okay, was looking at a octavia, but then i noticed a VRs Fabia, thought, mmmm, tasty, just test drove one and oh my gowd the engine !

anyway, befor i go and spend

The toys your after are better known as optional extras ;) Theres not much more I could want on my vRS apart from Xenons and cruise would've been nice if I'd had the money. As for pro's it's excellent to drive, comfortable at speed and definately bags a punch when you give it some with all that torque, oh and good fuel economy I get about 45 mpg at the moment with mixed driving but was getting 52-55 mpg on motorway at 60-70 mph. Mine is only 3 weeks old and I've done just over 1500 miles most just for the sake of driving it. As of yet I haven't found any cons apart from since day 1 my gearbox has been a bit crap, it never wants to go into reverse and have trouble getting it in to 4th and 5th while driving but I'm taking it to a garage to get it sorted.

There are lots of mods you can get for performance and at quite a good price compared to other marques. The most popular being an ecu remap, green panel filter and cupra air intake which make a good combination of about 180-195bhp. As far as styling goes you could get it lowered and put a sports grill on the front which I think is enough as it's a fairly good looking car as is.

Hope that helps.

Octi is bigger. All depends what you're after, both are solid cars. vRS Furby is pretty fast, the equivalent Octi is a lot more dosh but you get a petrol engined car, which you may prefer.

what about the seats? the dealer said he hated the seats and the colour or um, i didnt mind um to be honest? lol

also he rekoned the sound system was rubbish!

what you all think?

Pros:-

+ Looks, both inside and out (this is subjective)

+ High level of build quality (interior)

+ Efficiency (40 MPG even on spirited drives)

+ Low insurance + tax - Group 9 and lower tax for being a diesel

+ Performance (Standstill starts not its forte due to short gearing and lots of torque, midrange performance is impressive, noticable "shove" in the back in all gears)

+ Comfortable - both driving position and ride (except on very rough roads)

+ Feels bigger and more exclusive than it is - classy

+ Good amount of specification for the price

+ Stealthy - doesnt attract the wrong attention, especially with a debadged @rse.

Cons:-

- Its a diesel, you might not appreciate its noisy tick over or lack of 7000 rpm action, or the effortless power delivery that sees you going fast without realising it. You feel the acceleration but dont hear it... poor impression of speed (100 feels like 60).

- Diesel lump heavy, so front heavy handling - poor standard tyres, underdamped, feels like it could do with a stiffer setup. Plenty of grip generally, but a little "brutal" with its treatment of corners - lacks finesse.

- Might take you a while to appreciate its finer points... more satisfying to drive in a more "relaxed" fashion - unlike most hot hatches, and somewhat at odds with its image.

- Brakes lack feel and fade can be an issue depending on how aggressive you drive. Should have had the same braking setup as the Octavia as standard - callipers are too weedy.

- Might not end up being as frugal as you hoped. I very rarely achieve more than 45 MPG - having said that I dont spend that much time on motorways.

- Coming on here, reading the possibilites and then emptying your wallet so much, you may as well have just bought a sports car to start with :D

I find the seats fine, very comfortable and look good. Worth getting them diamond brighted or whatever, as they probably would mark easily otherwise. 16k miles and not much sign of wear on mine.

Sound system is not total rubbish but not great - about what you would expect from a soundsystem in a

I've had two comment from people on here that the Fabia vRS seats are more comfortable than the Octavia vRS seats. And yes they are Octavia drivers :D

Seat colours are not what I wanted, for sure. Beyond that, the sound system as standard is pretty decent for the price of the car. Not the best, not the worst, certainly good enough for reasonable use.

The way I look at car audio anyway is that if you are really 'into it' you'll probably upgrade it. I will probably slap in a sub of some kind but that's about it for me, others rip out the whole lot and start again :)

Yeah I reckon it would be quite acceptable with a subwoofer in... I'm thinking of just taking that route myself because I am tight :D

It is actually pretty bad...the main problem with it is it's low power output, which even the cheapest of aftermarket head units delivering much better quality sound.

As a result though, it's fairly cheap to achieve phenomenal improvements in the sound! :D

I agree low power output is the problem. So my fix was fit an amp :D

That was my first port of call too, and for the 15 minutes it was working on mine it did indeed sound pretty good. Shame the line out was kicking out some pretty iffy voltages though... :(

Rob.

The speakers must be quite good as standard then, because I find the sound acceptable for an OEM unit, and this comes from someone who used to be a bit of a home hifi nut... ;)

That's what I got told by someone else as well - I wasnt' paying much attention to the standard sound due to doing a test drive :D

I don't need loud particularly, just decent sound. I will probably spend some dosh on sound-deafening material which will generally benefit the car, get a sub and then if required I'll drop in an amp. As I'm getting the cd-changer factory fitted, changing the HU would be a total pain now, I must admit ;)

The speakers are the same quality as in the Octy (and hence are pretty pants), but the design of the mountings in the Fabia and Superb mean that they do sound better.

Not sure what they've done with the New Octy though...

Rob.

Hopefully they haven't made it worse

lol, right so the sound system aint the best but easy to improve, thats okay then :D

What about things like toys and things, like i saw a thread about adding a tray under the radio?

how much other stuff if there like that? im a kid and love pressing things and pulling things in the car :D

(theres a dirty comment there im sure!)

Main faults are lack of bass and a volume control which is erratic to say the least
Bear in mind the system has adjustible speed sensitive volume control (GALA) - needs a bit of experimentation to get the right setting

Pulling stuff in a tray isn't the best  - backseat may be more comfy ;)

I've turned that off actually.

It was simple volume control adjustments I was talking about. Sometimes it turns down when I want it to turn up, and other times it will jump right up nearly blowing the speakers. One reason why I am starting to feel that although I was considering keeping the standard unit and amping it, I am better off replacing the headunit, and taking advantage of a better built in amp, better DACs and better facilities.

God you.ve ordered every toy you can for your furby! :D

i'm in a dilema now though, not sure weather to hold out a year for a 2nd hand Citreon C4 coupe, mmmmmmm, you get a TON loads more toys and gadets in that, and the styling is just, well, sexy!

cant bloody decide though!

You'll be in first-name terms with your local AA man if you buy a 2nd-hand Citroen! Read a review of the C4 VTR the other week, and they weren't too kind to it - about the only things it had going for it were the styling (a big factor, I admit), the large number of 'toys' available (at extra cost), and the discounts Citroen offer on new car sales (just as well, as RRP is approaching Golf levels...)

The VTR is just a spec level and styling package now, so there's no performance advantage over a standard one (think Corsa SXi - all mouth, no trousers), and the VTS starts at over

There's a few things you can add. There's the cup-holder which sits alongside the radio, rear parcel shelf cargo-net, damped grab handles and sun glasses holder. Think someone was also toying with fitting an auto-dimming rear view mirror. Basically, have a look at the other models in the VAG stable and see what features take your fancy. Chances are someone on here's tried to fit it ;):D
