Suspension issues

Featured Replies

hi all

I am a new member and a new(and very impressed) skoda owner

I previously owned a LR Disco and now the proud owner of a 1999 Octy TDI

My question is this. Is it typical for my car to quite low. eg when i try to park with two wheels on the pavement i always grind the front bumper/spoiler and if i go down a relatively shallow slope i bottom out the front bumper, even going at walking pace.

I am mega impressed with this car and even more so at the strengt of the engine(185,000) but feel the suspension ust isnt right if this keeps hapening

What can i look for and are there any recurring problems that can be rctified.

Many thanks

Clearance isn't usually an issue. Sounds like your car may have been lowered. Post a photo up & we should be able to tell you.

hi thanks for your rapid response i very much doubt it has been lowered because the gent i bought it off was mid 70s and owned it from new. I will post a pic and perhaps be proven wrong however i have parked next to another octy estate in sainsburys car park and they sit identicaly

Many thanks

The front bumper overhangs quite a bit and is easy to catch

Thnx,

embarrasingly my main reason for putting this post up is that i recently cracked the sump on a pavement. The whole street contained cars with 2 wheels on the kerb so i folowed suit. next thing a grinding noise from below . resulting with me having to repair with e-metal from work, i believe this cant be right

especially as a dozen or so other cars were parked the same as me. and before anybody says anything im 5 ft 8 and 12 stone so not some obese so and so.

many thanks

The ends of the springs can break, and which could cause the car to sit a bit lower. Within a week of owning mine, the ex gf managed to bash a curb with it and take out some of the plastic under-tray stuff :'(

I am careful, and I seem to avoid most things now :-)

185k - just run in then :-) 90, or the 110TDI? (Octy, not the LR!)

It you measure the ground clearance where bumper meets the wheel arch liner, it should be 16cm at the lowest point.

110 and totally amazed with its strength.

Just towed the caravan to hereford and back averaging 35 MPG(double the disco)

I have noticed that the suspension top mounts protrude about3/4 inch in engine bay

Many thanks

I popped a screw up through the middle of my bumper to help lift it up, which improved the "nose scuffing" issue somewhat.

If you want to check for broken springs, then open the bonnet and check that the gap between the spring caps and the turret. If the spring caps is sitting down on the turret, then the spring on that side is broken.

I have found that mine scrapes less on car park ramps now I have the lower stiffer springs installed!

But when I removed them I found my front shocks were completely knackered so I assume that's why.

Ok

i assumed stiffer springs/bushes would rectify the apparent issues with grounding out.

What is the most cost effective way. I am not a boy racer so do not want some rediculous lowering set and i am also not financially flush but i do want to get this sorted as it is quite annoying

Reccomendations please!!!!!
