How many miles and BHP

Featured Replies

How many miles a fabia vrs mk1 is good for?

I'm looking to get my first skoda and looking on autotrader I found a lot of examples with nearly or over 100K miles which it's far too many for my liking.

60K would be the max I would go for, but, how many miles is a Fabia (modified) good for? 150K?

Also, on a completely different note, what is the max bhp you can get out without changing the turbo or the internals?

Thanks

Alex

Not a vRS, but a Fabia PD100 and I have just had mine remapped last Friday with 140k miles on the clock and produced a healthy 114bhp, 180lb/ft standard and 150bhp, 235lb/ft after the remap

Those are impressive figures on your PD100

200bhp - 152,000 miles at current. You`ll have to remember that whenever modding cars the further they are pushed, the more stuff they knacker tho. So it`s a case of spotting the next week link & replacing before it lets go. No different to any other car but when your racking up miles worth bearing in mind

My last two VAG TDIs have both done about the same milage for me (I got rid of both of them on 134,000 miles), one being an early 90bhp VE engine, and the second being my PD150 Leon. Both were running perfectly mechanically when I handed over the keys, I did look up the regplate of the Golf on AskMID a couple of months back and it's still on the road 4 years later although now showing as a 110, whether this is due to engine failure and swap or DVLA cockup I don't know. The Fabia I've just bought has covered 84,000 miles although a lot of the major mechanicals are much younger - the hybrid turbo and the suspension have all done around 20k, and the gearbox has been apart within that 20k to fit a diff so there should be nothing wrong in there either otherwise it would have had a new box with no faults or at least any faults repaired. Personally I'm looking forward to at least 3 years out of this car by which point it'll be up to similar milage to the previous two, and as long as it still puts a smile on my face I'll probably keep it well after that.

Hi Matt

That sounds good as 200+ bhp is what I would aiming for, and your high mileage is reassuring  did you have to change the clutch to support the extra power and, would you know your current 0-60 time and top speed?

The more I look into it the more a fabia make sense :) also interested on the mk2 due to the better performaces but it's out of budget and looks a bit girly :p

what car did you buy?

yellow awesome one? or my old yellow 05 one?

The Awesome one. I'd seen your old one, and yours was cheaper, but it was a lot further for me and I was put off a bit by the fact that it seemed to leave you around October 2010 (based on your posts on another forum I found), and was already up for sale again in March when I originally saw the Awesome one. Yours was cheaper and had bigger brakes and xenons, but the Awesome one was closer, had the diff, and what I perceived to have a better history (I've got an envelope an inch thick stuffed with Awesome invoices for all the major work and the guy's owned it for 3+ years). Took a bit of umming and ahhing over it but in the end decided that the Awesome one was the better car for me - I was upgrading from 288mm brakes on the Leon which was a heavier car, so decent 312s on a Fab are still a hell of an upgrade, I'd get the diff in there, and I can always put Brembos on it in future if I want to for less than it'd cost to get a diff fitted to your old car to match the spec (Brembo parts are cheaper, and the labour is more DIYable).

There is many a 100k. miler on this forum, some tuned and some not. The engine is not fully run in until 70 to 80k. miles. The main engine will be good for 200k. if looked after & serviced regularly. The weak points are the turbo and the clutch after 100k tuned or not. Apart from that a few little niggles like any other car.

Mine in particular is tuned nearly to 200bhp and has just clocked up 100k. The turbowas uprated to a PD150 hybrid, the clutch to a Sachs 3 years ago and is running as smooth and reliable as ever. My advice to you is to buy a well serviced Mk1, whatever the mileage and upgrade to at least a PD150 turbo and a new clutch, that way you'll be ok for a good for years after. Factor in an extra £1k for the turbo and £400 for a clutch when viewing a car if you are intent on upgrading. There will always be smaller components to pay for over your ownership but that is no different to any other used car, and hopefully if you can weild a spanner it helps keep the costs down. Low tax, insurance and 45mpg on my car also helps with the running costs.

As for performance figures like 0-60, forget about that, it's not important, what counts is the overtaking power, the tuned diesel pulls like a train once it gets going.

Thanks soot1e

Am I right to think that to achieve 200bhp the standard turbo has to be changed? I'm hoping to sell my current car for around 7K, buy a good vrs for around 4/4.5K and spend around 1K in mods, first of all will be on handling better air flow and brakes, than, move into remap and turbo, unless I find an already partly modded car on here and start from what I think it suits better next

The kkk turbo is known to be weaker than the garret but some peoples kkk turbo are still going strong and are remapped its a gamble tbh lol. I'm gonna get the pd150 next to be on the safe side.

You'll need a PD150 Hybrid to comfortably top 200bhp + a custom remap. £1k. will easily buy some decent suspension, RARB, 312mm. front brakes, Panel filter (DIY fit)to get you started. They are most popular mods and can be found through the Site sponsors or in the Briskoda classified ads.

Buying a ready modified car I would be looking at the receipts and finding out who done them, hopefully a known VAG tuner, you'll get to know them. For starters there is Awsome GTI, Jabbasport, Star performance and AMD Technik.

Do performance panel filters make any difference? Cus I got one given to me but dunno if it gonna make any performance difference or less smoke etc

164k running 182bhp & 302ft-lb still on original clutch and turbo had remap on for well over a year done 2 RR days 1/4 mile drag and a trip to the nurburgring pulls like a train love it i have many freinds who have astra vxr's and focus ST who struggle to keep up with me on spirited drives on mine I've got updated brakes, custom FMIC and water sprayer, eibach springs, white line RARB, seat sport strut brace, PD160 intake and panel fillter don't be put of by high mileage just make sure it's got a very good history

Cheers for all the info guys

Will need to do some more homework (i.e. Hybrid turbo? KKK?), does anyone know 0-60 and top speed?

Seen ADM on the redline magazine the other day, if I get a fabia a visit will be a must

0-60 is 9.3secs and top speed around 130mph

but don't let that 0-60 time bother u...

my MR2 does 0-60 in 7.2secs and my mums ford focus diesel 0-60 10.7secs but from a rolling start her cars is simply quicker thanks to the in gear grunt.

i know a fabia mk1 vrs would see off my MR2 in the straight's even with a lower bhp figure

This is for a standard model, any chance to get the 0-60 down to 7 sec and the speed up to 140/150? (with the right safety components fitted) or is just too far?

How the car feels it's important, figures it's what makes you grin for longer :D , hopefully will get a test drive on a standard model in couple of weeks.

I`v got to say, figures do absolutely **** all to me :giggle: It`s how it drives that makes me grin. I`m sure with enough money put in it would achieve those figures, but in real life, how often do you do 0-60? I rather have plenty of grunt between 40 to 80mph. Same with top speed, in real life, how often do you get into 3 figures? As long as it pull`s well on the motorway, i`m not fussed how fast it goes flat out, my license is too valuable to me. Even on the track you`ll not really top out, the fabia does struggle top end, not very aerodynamic

All fair points

I'm trying to to get an idea of what the car can achieve before I spend money on and at it, the mods are intended to make me grin on the road and go fast on tracks only

Panel filters don't give any power gains that you would notice but they do help the engine breathe better + you can wash them as often as you like to keep them in tip top order.

If you are doing track days then you will need to sort out the understeer problem, they do it a lot. I could never find the right gear on some corners, 2nd too many revs and 3rd not enough revs.

That said, tracking a DERV is a challenge and getting it right costs a bit, just ask Devonutopia.

For a rough idea, and slightly better to compare motor to motor, standard 1/4 mile around 16.5 seconds, remapped 15.5 seconds then hybrid & bigger power sub 14 second. As always tho, much of it is down to the driver.

Thanks guys

Handling is first on my list as it's pointless to go get high bhp if the car can't cope
