Engine oil

Featured Replies

Hi all

Can't say I understand the ins and out of engine oil. I have a 2010 Octavia L&K with a 1.8 petrol engine on a fixed service interval. The oil needs a little top up. I have supply of 504 oil (Castrol Edge 5w 30) from my last Octavia. I see that for fixed service intervals 502 is advised. Can I use my 504 without ill effect? All techie advice gratefully received - Adrepos

For the sake of peace of mind and a few pounds spent it is better to use the correct recommendation. If a car is set to variable service in theory the oil could be in the car much longer so is designed to cope with that. If you are on fixed intervals and an oil change is scheduled in the next service then one small top up with the Edge will not do any harm.

If it were me, I'd go onto Opie Oils and enter your car's details, and heed the advice given there emoticon-0144-nod.gif

Alternatively - check your handbook. Whatever is mentioned will not be *advised*, it will be mandatory. Unless you don't like your warranty or engine very much that is....

Thsnks - all good advice and pretty much what I thought

504.00 is ok. Thats for my engine too 1.8 TSi, but on the manual it states that 504.00 is used for fixed service, i.e every 15.000km, while 507.00 for flexible service. Mind you this last service i had it got 507.00 from the dealer due to 504.00 not beeing sent any more to them from Skoda, so 507.00 is now standard.

VW 504.00/507.00 is the latest spec and can be used in place of all other specs. The 504 refers to petrol engines, the 507 to diesel. It is very expensive so if your car is not on variable servicing or does not have a DPF use the correct lower spec oil.
