Octy2, upgraded speakers still not sounding right

Featured Replies

Hi guys,

In my octy 2 I replaced the OEM speakers with (with adapters) 6.25" Vibe Black Air speakers up front (110w RMS) and Vibe Black Air 5.25" (100w RMS) in the rear, all connected to a Vibe Spacebox 1200w Amp. All the RMS figures match up within 5-10% and all connected with good quality cable. The tweeters all went in place of the OEM tweeters in the doorcards.

Now the speakers pack some serious punch, but the tweeters sound very 'tinny' and 'harsh' at high volumes, almost like someone is hissing after they sing, this is at higher volumes but it is by no means excessively loud.

Having spent all the money and got it all installed I am somewhat stuck as to where to go. Currently in the audio settings I have the tweeters turned all the way down (-7), the mids at -3 and the bass at 0 and it still sounds harsh/bright/tinny.

The head unit i have is one of these Chinese GPS/TV/Bluetooth/USB all in one units which i bought after extensive research. The general opinion is that the sound quality output is surprisingly good, and on par with a good mid spec headunit. I have had no problems with it at all, and am thoroughly impressed with everything bar the TV tuner.

Can anyone offer any suggestions?

Thanks in advance guys :)

Have you double checked that all the speakers are correctly phased?

Yep, was as careful as I could be installing them all to make sure of it! Will double check later but I'd be very surprised if they were out of phase! :(

All the sound controls just plus or minus for the bass, mid, treble?? If so then not enough adjustment!! I have a single din Pioneer head unit and for each of those "adjustments" I can shift the frequency of each of those set points, and the drop-off for each as well (build in cross over function), then there is the seperate sub-woofer output cut-off level and frequency. Sounds like you need to add a cross over unit!! B)

This headunit doesn't have any additional crossovers aside from the basic tweeter/mids/bass. :(

Just redoing a post...this might help as I was a bit vague

I use the standard cables......trying to remember the correct technical explanation....Right here goes.....

I have Bass, Mid, and Treble sound settings (three main points). For each one of these I can increase or decrease the gain value by 6 points. I can adjust the centre point frequency that is called Bass, Mid, and treble (there are four different frequencies for each of those three main points). I can also adjust the "drop-off" or over-lap slope for each of the three main points from steep to shallow in four points!....I also have separate bass boost control, separate sub woofer controls etc......so not really a cross over network...more like complex equalizer system!! B)
