12v power in jumbo box?

Featured Replies

Hi guys,

Recently got an octavia vrs hatch with the jumbo box.

I'm planning on installing a USB power socket in the box. I've already bought the USB 12volt adapter (a micro kensignton 2.1amps version so it can power my iPad as well)

The 12v socket near the handbrake is always on and as such I'm worried about bridging from that, is that a problem? I'll only ever have something plugged into the USB charger whilst I'm driving the (more than likely the iPhone). If thisnis the option I know how to get into the back of the jumbo box by taking the air vents out but I don't know how I can expose the underneath of the 12v socket by handbrake in order to bridge off that.

If the above is not an option I've been told I need to take the power cables all the way to the fuse board and wire them directly into that? This is where I'm confused, how the he'll do I do that?

Cheers guys

P.s. The USB has a built in electronic fuse if that helps? Cheers

I've done something similar, done quite a few things like this now. These cars are pretty good for this, everything goes together with Torx-T20 screws or clips into place.

Tapping into the 12v is probably best - it's already fused for you, and it's perm live so you can leave things plugged in to charge like if you're away camping (like we use it for!). To get to the underside you work from the back of the centre console. From memory you need to remove the ashtray thing in the rear, then there's 2 torx screws there, i can't remember if there's torx screws or if it's just clips down the sides of the centre console but they need to come off too.

You basically just start from the back of the console and work your way forward. For soldering inside the car i use one of those gas irons that heats and cools rapidly. Tried doing it with a 40 watt general purpose iron but you need somewhere to put the iron and make sure you don't touch it against anything. For £20 the gas iron is worth it.
